July 2, 2008: Honda Accord Euro Commercial Shows How It's Done

It's no secret that I was a fan of "Superman Returns", but even I thought it was far from perfect. Beyond the obvious issues it had with story, one of my other concerns was the visual effects.

The flying in "Superman Returns" somehow didn't look real enough for me. In my opinion they used too much CGI and not enough actual footage of Brandon Routh. Just because you have the computer technology doesn't mean it's always the best way to go. Much of the flying sequences in 1978's "Superman: The Movie" looked more realistic than those in "Superman Returns".

In Australia at the moment there's a TV commercial for the new Honda Euro Accord. The "Wooosh" TV ad features a flying man. I'm sure, with their crew of 50 people, the Honda commercial had a fraction of a fraction of the budget set aside for Bryan Singer, yet the flying in the TV commercial (below), to me, looks more realistic than that in "Superman Returns".

The official Euro Honda website has a larger version of the TV commercial and also a behind-the-scenes video on the making of the commercial.

Note: The Superman Homepage is in no way connected with Honda, and is simply reporting on this as a comparison between visual effects.
