September 24, 2017: Darren Aronofsky Interested in Directing a Superman Movie

In an interview with Darren Aronofsky for his new film "Mother", CinePop asked him if he was interested in taking on any superhero films.

"I mean, you know, Superman would always be interesting." Aronofsky explained. "But they're already deep into reinventing him, so that's not going to happen for a long time."

However, he did proceed that comment by acknowledging that all the best superhero characters have already been done...

"Well I would always hope to do something unique." Aronofsky added. "That's kind of my goal. I think with those films, you have to be very careful, because they are about communicating with as big of an audience as you possibly can. Audiences who goes to see those films expect a certain type of movie. But I guess a lot of the great superhero titles are done, people have used them up. So now it's kinda characters that aren't as interesting. But you never know. We'll see what comes my way."

Aronofsky is on the record as having enjoyed "Man of Steel" even though it meant another director (Zack Snyder) got the chance to take on Superman ahead of him.

"Superman's one of the holy grails. It's Superman. It's the best superhero," he said. "Batman is great, of course, but it's Superman. He's the same level. That possibility was great. I thought Zack was a great choice, and I loved his Watchmen movie," said Aronofsky. "I thought it was great. I thought that as a fan of the comic, you couldn't hope for a better interpretation. I liked the orthodoxy of it."
