Action Comics #800

December 4, 2002: Kelly Talks “Action Comics” #800

Newsarama had a chat with Action Comics writer Joe Kelly to talk about the up-coming 800th issue of the comic book title. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

So - 799 issues later, Siegel and Shuster's creation becomes the first superhero comic book in the American market to reach its 800th issue with February's Action Comics #800. If you're writer Joe Kelly, how do you top the series last anniversary issue, #775, which people are still talking about as one of your finest? Well, you take your time, plan, and call a bunch of different people with names like Sale, Lee, Plunkett, Bermejo, Ferry, and Rouleau.

"#775 just came out of the blue for us, so we decided to try something a little different, and do a standalone story," Kelly said. "With #800, we had a little bit more lead time, and did a little bit more talking about it - we started planning on it a good nine months in advance, as far as what we wanted to do on it, as well as the 'take' we wanted to use.

"It took a little while to get to where we ended up. There are so many factors in play with a big number issue like this - are you going to get new people to come in? Is it therefore a jumping on point? Is it really just for the fans? Do you keep your ongoing story going on through it, or do you make it a standalone? We batted those questions around like fifteen different times, and finally came up with where we are now."
