Superman: Last Stand on Earth

December 11, 2002: Steve Gerber Talks “Superman: Last Stand on Earth”

The Pulse website caught up with Steve Gerber to discuss his up-coming Superman Elseworlds story "Superman: Last Stand on Earth", the legal problems surrounding the book and what fans can expect from the story.

In 2000 we met a Clark Kent who was rocketed to Krypton when the planet Earth was due to explode. Young Clark grew up in the House of El, and we learned the fate of Earth - which was similar to Krypton, except the world didn't explode. A decade has passed since Clark found his way to Earth and this is where this sequel, Superman: Last Stand on Earth picks up. THE PULSE spoke with writer, Steve Gerber about this project due in stores this January. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

Q: When did you begin work on the sequel to Last Son on Earth?

GERBER: Shortly after the first two scripts were done. When I finished the second one, I realized there was a lot more of this story to tell. Kal-El was about to change the destiny of Earth forever. Jor-El was about to upend Kryptonian society. I wanted to see how those conflicts played out.

Q: When does Last Stand on Earth take place? What has happened to earth in the ten years since "Last Son of Earth"?

GERBER: We pick up the story eleven years after the conclusion of Book Two. Kal-El has employed elements of Kryptonian technology to assist in restoring Earth's environment and rebuilding its cities. Population is again on the rise. A world government has been established. And humanity, having been given a taste of the Kryptonian good life, wants more -- more than Kal-El is willing to give, because he knows where Krypton's technological progress eventually led. With political pressure mounting against him, Kal-El eventually decides to leave the planet, rather than give Earth the technology that plunged Krypton into 100,000 years of war.
