November 26, 2002: Nicolas Cage To Sell More Comics

Including Rare, Early Superman "Fanzine"

(Dallas, TX) - There are a few more pages remaining in the Nicolas Cage superheroes saga, including the earliest known Superman comic. Four more of the Academy Award-winning actor's vintage comic books, not included in last month's $1.68 million sale of his collection, will be offered in an auction December 6.

"The four comic books are science fiction 'fanzines' created in 1933 by Cleveland, Ohio teenagers, Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster, the co-creators of Superman who formally appeared in a comic book in 1938. So, these 1933 publications are the earliest known portrayal of Superman," explained John Petty, Director of Heritage Comics Auctions of Dallas, Texas.

Fanzines are rudimentary, fan-created magazines that often contain more text than illustrations.

"In one of their fanzines Siegel and Schuster wrote and drew the story, 'The Reign of the Superman,' that is considered a precursor to their eventual creation of Superman as we know him today. Another of their fanzines contained the first printed image of King Kong," said Petty.

The group of four rare publications from actor Cage's collection will be part of an anticipated multi-million auction sale of comic books, comic art, and movie posters taking place on December 6 and 7 by Heritage Comics Auctions in Dallas.

Why weren't these items included in the record setting October 10 auction of Cage's other comic books? "They arrived too late to be included in the catalog. Sometimes even Superman gets delayed by the mail," said Petty.

Heritage is the world's largest collectibles auctioneer with auction sales of more than $70 million in 2001, and expected auction sales of about $90 million for 2002.
