Adventures of Superman #604

May 27, 2002: “Sorry!” Says Superman Editor Eddie Berganza

Newsarama caught up with Superman comic book editor Eddie Berganza to talk about the artwork in "Adventures of Superman #604", here's an excerpt from their discussions...

Superman editor Eddie Berganza has one word for everyone who bought Adventures of Superman no. 604.

"Sorry."

The cover by Carlos Pacheco was almost irresistible, Superman getting his ash kicked by his evil counterpart of Earth III, Ultraman. Joe Casey's story lived up to the cover, but the art was disappointing.

Let me back up here. Saying the art by the team of Carlos Meglia, Sanford Greene and Paco Herrera is disappointing is like saying Enron was having a bit of accounting trouble.

The shapes were only vaguely human (in Superman, unsure about Enron) and don't get me started on the fingers and hands. The art was awful. Worse than awful, it was horrible, painful, ghastly, terrible ... you get the picture.

And what does Berganza have to say for himself?

"Carlos Meglia had to flee Buenos Aires with his family because of riots and political unrest," Berganza said. "He managed to get the rough work to another artist in Mexico to finish it, but he had not done American comics. We needed to get it out to stay on schedule. Everyone did their best, but it was not that good. I would give everyone their money back if I could."

Oh. As excuses go, that's a pretty good one. It's tough to worry about drawing a "funnybook" when you're running for your life.

I'm kinda sorry I brought it up.

But it gave Berganza a chance to talk about the short-term future of the Man of Steel. He said artists will continue to drop in and out of the four monthly Superman titles through the summer. In the fall, stability returns.
