June 19, 2002: Superman's "Ending Battle" in September

Newsarama's Michael Doran has written an excellent article about the up-coming "Ending Battle" storyline that will run through the regular Superman comic books starting in September. Here's an excerpt from his article titled "Duck If You Know Clark"...

The phenomena of superhero "secret identities" is starting to get a lot of attention from comics writers these days, with the private lives of Daredevil, Iron Man and Batman all playing front and center of their respective titles, just to name a few... And now starting in September, Superman's double-life as Clark Kent will be the straw that stirs the drink of two month's worth of the core Superman titles in "Ending Battle".

The "epic" eight-part storyline runs through all the Superman books in the months of September and October, with the numbered triangle system reappearing on the covers for the duration of the storyline, to - according to DC - "help readers keep track of reading order". In the storyline, some of Superman's deadliest arch villains start targeting friends and family closest to Clark Kent.

"It started out with Joe Casey pointing out how cool Superman is to the real world, and yet in the world of the DC Universe, he's just another superhero," explained Superman editor Eddie Berganza, asked to recount the origin of the storyline. "So the challenge was do we show he's the best of the best?

"Well, in comic books that's done by the hero fighting a supervillain, and since again we were inclined to show how cool Superman is, one villain wasn't gonna cut it. A whole bunch, though - who know to attack those close to Clark Kent - that started things in motion. Things that we will continue beyond this arc to show how Superman is Superman."
