December 22, 2015: Brian Buccellato Looks Ahead at Final Year of "Injustice"

Injustice Writer Brian Buccellato sat down for a chat with IGN.com to talk about the fifth and final year of "Injustice: Gods Among Us", filling us in on what the focus will be as we head towards the final conflict between Superman and Batman. Here's a part of the interview...

IGN: The past few volumes have pretty much revolved around Superman's Regime and Batman's resistance dealing with external threats, whether it was the Green Lantern Corps or the Greek gods or whatever. It seems like with this volume you're trying to bring things full circle and make the Batman/Superman rivalry the focus again. Would you say that's the case?

Buccellato: Absolutely. I think it becomes a sort of arms race for allies. We've gone through and seen so many heroes affected and be a part of the Injustice world, but now there are villains on the table. Superman needs as many people as he can find on his side, and of course Batman needs people to combat Superman. They make their own deals with the devil in order to change this war, and that involves bringing in the villains.

IGN: Both you and Tom have talked in past interviews about how one of the big challenges with this series is making Superman's downfall seem believable. Where would you say his head is at as Year Five opens in the aftermath of the battle with the Greek gods. How far along in that transition is he now? Buccellato: I think it's almost complete. There are a couple more things he's going to do that are pretty treacherous and remind you that he's a bad guy. But he's already done some terrible things - killing Green Arrow and Montoya. Lots of people have died at his hands. People have been hurt at his hands. He's taken their freedom. He's done a lot of terrible things already. Things that if you named Joker or Lex Luthor, you'd have no question that these are the villains. But part of it is that we want to hold onto the fact that it is Superman. There is good in him. He claims he's doing things for the right reasons. It's a little more of a subtle shift for a lot of people, but he's pretty bad already. And it's only going to get worse.

Chapter #1 of "Injustice: Gods Among Us - Year Five" is available to download and read now from Comixology. Chapters #1 and #2 will be collected in print edition and released on Wednesday, January 6. Be sure to also read "Injustice: Year Four Annual #1" on sale Wednesday, December 30.
