August 17, 2015: Exclusive - John Romita Jr. Apologizes to Superman Fans

Superman #45 You may recall that on Wednesday, August 5 at Bryant Park in New York City, New York, comic artist John Romita, Jr. attended the graphic novel launch of SUPERMAN: THE MEN OF TOMORROW, collecting the acclaimed run of Romita, Jr. and best-selling writer Geoff Johns on the monthly SUPERMAN comic series.

Superman Homepage reporter T.A. Ewart was granted a few minutes with John for an exclusive one-on-on video interview about his work on "Superman", where he asked him specifically about his comments in a recent USA Today interview, in which he was quoted as saying:

"Half of fans will like it, half of them won't," the artist says. "If they just drop the book because you changed something, then they're not good enough to please anyway. But you've got to look to change, and hopefully it'll be two-thirds liking it."

It seems John wasn't 100% happy with the response he gave the Superman Homepage in that video interview. Here's how T.A. Ewart reports on the follow-up chat he had with John Romita Jr...

I had the opportunity to speak with John Romita Jr., a few days after meeting with him at Bryant Park, in NYC. It turns out that the interview niggled at his mind and he returned to the USA Today article to see his own words in print. JRJr was nonplused by what he read and very much taken aback that his thoughts came forth in such a "mush mouth" manner. That fans would be not good enough, he stated, "that doesn't make sense." and "My God, is that what came out?"

Romita Jr. recognizes that while he has more than his fair share of detractors and supporters, ultimately, the burden lies squarely with the work that he produces. "Superman," Romita Jr. went on to say, "is a character with over 75 years of history, and while changes need to occur for obvious reasons, the aforesaid can come across as 'cynical' if not executed well." If fans don't take to the changes made, then he says, "We didn't do a good enough job to please them. I didn't do a good enough job to please them."

John wants readers to know that his words, as printed in USA Today, do not denote his feelings towards readers, and to any slighted by them, "My apologies for that error."
