November 4, 2013: Josh Elder Discusses "Adventures of Superman" Personal Story
Writer Josh Elder has spoken to USA Today about the deeply personal "Dear Superman" story he has written for this week's "Adventures of Superman" digital-first comic book series.
- At 9 years old and an only child, his single mother was diagnosed with late-stage cancer, and Elder had to take care of her through the aftermath of an invasive surgery. And a day before he turned 22, Elder himself was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkin's lymphoma, starting a seven-month ordeal of aggressive chemotherapy.
With "Dear Superman," Elder wants to give folks hope and strength, but also a feel-good helping of the hero, too.
"This is a story made for Superman," the writer says. "That's the reason the character exists. Sometimes the world's not a great place, but Superman shows up and makes it better and shows us how we can make it better."
