November 4, 2013: Josh Elder Discusses "Adventures of Superman" Personal Story

Adventures of Superman - Chapter #28 Writer Josh Elder has spoken to USA Today about the deeply personal "Dear Superman" story he has written for this week's "Adventures of Superman" digital-first comic book series.

At 9 years old and an only child, his single mother was diagnosed with late-stage cancer, and Elder had to take care of her through the aftermath of an invasive surgery. And a day before he turned 22, Elder himself was diagnosed with Stage 3 Hodgkin's lymphoma, starting a seven-month ordeal of aggressive chemotherapy.

With "Dear Superman," Elder wants to give folks hope and strength, but also a feel-good helping of the hero, too.

"This is a story made for Superman," the writer says. "That's the reason the character exists. Sometimes the world's not a great place, but Superman shows up and makes it better and shows us how we can make it better."
