June 6, 2013: DC Digital Comics Technology Getting an Interactivity Upgrade

DC ComicsDC Entertainment announced on June 4 that it is upping the stakes for digital comics publication with the unveiling of two new initiatives. Said DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson: "DC2 and DC2 Multiverse leverages technology to make iconic characters like Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman and Green Lantern even more relevant through highly interactive storytelling."

That technology includes, in DC2, the layering of dynamic artwork on to digital comic panels for "a new level of dimension to digital storytelling." With DC2 Multiverse, readers will get not only the dynamic artwork of DC2 but also "action sounds," the ability to "integrate a soundtrack" and the ability to "select" characters, storylines and plot developments to determine up to possibly "dozens" of story outcomes.

Though Superman led the pack of characters mentioned in Nelson's remarks, some die-hard fans will note (possibly wryly) that the technology itself will debut on Batman titles, with DC2 first going to Batman '66 and DC2 Multiverse first going to Batman: Arkham Origins.

No word yet on when the technology will be used on a Superman title, but we'll keep you posted.
