September 20, 2013: Marc Guggenhaim Takes Superman Back to Krypton

AOS #22 USA Today gives us a sneak peek into Chapter #22 of the "Adventures of Superman" stand-alone, continuity-free comic book series, in which writer Marc Guggenheim sends Superman back to his home world in a story titled "Tears of Krypton", a new three-part story arc starting next week.

The first chapter will be available for download Monday, while a print issue of the entire tale illustrated by Joe Bennett will be in comic shops in December. In it, Superman is told by a scientist at S.T.A.R. Labs that Krypton is still intact, so much so that he shows the Man of Steel live satellite footage of it in space.

"It makes Superman wonder - as I did - what makes him think that Krypton was destroyed?" Guggenheim says. "The only thing he's ever had to go on is the message that Jor-El had put in the rocket ship. So, what if Jor-El was lying, or what if Jor-El was wrong?"

During the course of the story, Superman travels to this world - reimagined by Bennett, whose Superman "draws on Curt Swan and George Perez and Jose Garcia-Lopez in this really terrific way," the writer says - and the arc allows Guggenheim to revisit Krypton "in a way that didn't involve an alternate reality or time travel, both of which I feel like have been done quite a bit."
