March 18, 2013: "Superman vs. Orson Scott Card" Panel Discussion

Adventures of Superman #1 A discussion panel titled "Superman vs. Orson Scott Card" will be held at the Soho Gallery for Digital Art in New York on Wednesday, April 10.

Panelists David Gerrold, Joe Illidge, Paul Kupperberg and Danny Fingeroth will discuss the hiring of Orson Scott Card, an anti-gay activist, to write a Superman story. In one corner, Superman: Last Son of Krypton, who has powers and abilities far greater than those of mortal men, and who fights for truth, justice and the American Way. In the other corner, Orson Scott Card, NY times bestselling author of ENDER'S GAME (soon to be a major motion picture) and many other novels, who has equated homosexuality with pedophilia and strongly opposes same-sex marriage.

When DC Comics hired Card to write for its upcoming Adventures of Superman web-comic series, gay rights supporters and their allies rose up, as did civil libertarians who oppose blacklisting creators who hold a currently unpopular opinion. Petitions circulated calling on DC Comics to rescind its hiring of Card, and threatening boycotts.

The SGDA's COMIC BOOK ROUND TABLE series presents SUPERMAN VS.ORSON SCOTT CARD: a discussion of how the comic book field has continued to attract controversy and how it copes with the on-again/off-again scrutiny of the mainstream media and it's perception by American Culture vs. the reality.

The panel will be held on April 10th starting at 7pm at The Soho Gallery for Digital Art located at 138 Sullivan St. (Between Houston and Prince) New York. Tickets are $10 on brownpaper tickets or $15 at the door.
