May 4, 2011: Metropolis, Illinois Under Water

Metropolis Flooded Metropolis, Illinois - the home of Superman - is dealing with a disaster that could do with the help of the Man of Steel. Water levels in the Ohio River continue to rise, flooding the town, shuttering the local casino and swamping some neighborhoods away from the elevated, danger-free town square where a 15-foot statue of the Man of Steel stands sentry.

Metropolis Tourism Director Angie Shelton told the Superman Homepage, "It is just unbelievable to witness this massive flooding. But on a positive note - the people in our community, all ages, have come together to work hard to help their neighbors."

The Ohio River at Metropolis is forecast to rise an additional 5 feet between now and Friday, May 6.

As of Tuesday, the water level is at 339.43 feet. The city of Metropolis is at a sea level of 276.6 feet. The mayor of Metropolis is advising anyone whose home is at an elevation of 340 feet or below should take precautions.

Thankfully the flood waters have not affected the Super Museum nor the Hollywood Americana Museum in Metropolis. More information can be found at kfvs12.com.
