August 25, 2012: Phyllis Coates to Receive Career Achievement Award

Phyllis Coates Phyllis Coates, best known to Superman fans as Lois Lane from the first season of the "Adventures of Superman" TV series, will be honored with a Cinecon 48 Career Achievement Award at a celebrity banquet to be held at the Loews Hollywood Hotel (formerly the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel) on Sunday evening, September 2, 2012.

    Born in Texas Ms. Coates moved to California planning to enroll in UCLA but a chance encounter with showman Ken Murray led to a part in his vaudeville show. She worked as a chorus girl for Earl Carroll and also toured with USO shows. She was signed by Warner Bros. in 1948 and started out doing bit parts feature films. She was cast as Alice McDoakes in the long running series of Joe McDoakes shorts starting with her appearance in So You Want to Be in Politics (1948). In 1951 she landed the role of Lois Lane in the film Superman and the Mole Men. This led to her playing Lois in the Adventures of Superman TV series. She left after the first season continuing to work in films and on other TV shows.
