February 28, 2012: Superman's Long Advertising History

NetworkAwesome.com has put together an extensive collection of examples of Superman being used to promote products and services over the years.

Believe it or not, Superman was a hard sell for the young writer/artist team of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, taking about five years of rejection and frustration before finally finding a publisher in Harry Donenfeld and what would become DC Comics. As the young creators had anticipated, The Man of Steel almost immediately became the biggest thing since sliced bread, and a licensing department, known as "Superman, Inc" was quickly set up to handle all of the merchandising the character generated. In addition to selling anything and everything emblazoned with the Superman logo, the character also began shilling for other products. In the decades of advertising collected here, we find Supes hocking products as varied as breakfast cereal, bubble bath, cars, peanut butter, camcorders, toys, fast food and credit cards, as well as helping to get the word out on a few worthy causes. Beyond tracing the evolution of Superman as a marketing tool, this collection also traces the development of television advertising itself, from spots designed to be integrated into the flow of a TV program to through to the short-films starring Superman and Jerry Seinfeld, intended to become internet viral videos.

Running at just over half an hour, the following video (curated by Thomas Michalski) is well worth a watch.
