January 3, 2012: Peter Lupus - The Forgotten Superman

Best remembered for his role as strongman Willy Armitage in the original Mission: Impossible 1960s TV series, actor Peter Lupus also had a very brief stint as Superman in at least two sports-oriented one-minute public service announcements for the United States Air Force that aired on U.S. TV stations during 1974.

Long unseen since their initial airings (because DC Comics asked the USAF to withdraw the PSA's after Lupus posed nude for Playgirl magazine later that same year), one of these films has recently surfaced on YouTube.

The one-minute PSA (below) features championship basketball player Jerry Sloan, who at the time was a member of the Chicago Bulls. (A Basketball Hall of Famer and former head coach, Sloan today ranks third in all-time wins for the National Basketball Association).

After withdrawing the Lupus PSA's, at least one was re-shot with a different actor, and can be seen below. This PSA features the late Dick Williams, Major League Baseball player and coach.
