March 1, 2012: Global Fund for Women Honors "Smallville" Stars

Women of Smallville Fundraiser launched to raise money for women's organizations around the world in honor of the women of the former hit CW show, Smallville.

In honor of National Women's History Month and the women of the TV series "Smallville," a group of fans called SMALLVILLE WOMEN, BIG HEARTS is proud to announce their March fundraiser supporting the Global Fund for Women - an organization that provides flexible, timely grants to women's groups around the world.

SMALLVILLE WOMEN, BIG HEARTS (SVWBH) was created as a way to recognize the courageous and compassionate female characters on Smallville while also benefiting a worthy organization. It's the first initiative of its kind to aim at uniting fans of all the show's heroic women behind a common cause.

In the past four years, fans of Chloe Sullivan, Lana Lang, and Lois Lane have raised thousands of dollars for charities in their favorite character's honor. However, all three women have never been honored together and neither have the other worthy women from the show like Martha Kent, Kara Zor-El (Supergirl), and Tess Mercer. SVWBH wants to change that.

"As mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends, the women of Smallville dreamed and fought for a way to make the world a better place," said Elizabeth, partner of SVWBH. "Our goal is to unite to support the real life women and girls around the world who aspire to do the same."

Supporting the Global Fund for Women means supporting an organization which provides crucial grants (from $200 to $30,000) to women's organizations. So, if the SVWBH's initial $1,000 goal is reached (with the possibility of a goal increase or fundraiser extension), it's likely dozens of women's groups will receive the funds they need to do anything from improving women's access to resources like food and water, ensuring girls can go to school, protecting and advancing women's basic human rights, improving laws to make women safer at home and at work, and most importantly, transforming attitudes and behavior toward women locally and internationally.

Erica Durance, who played Lois Lane on Smallville, recently said, "We all have to find our own way of assisting others. We have a responsibility. It doesn't take a lot of money to make a difference in someone's life." The women we honor during Women's History Month, and the women of Smallville, all have the capacity to inspire others to be heroes in their own lives. So as these women get honored this month, please consider supporting extraordinary women around the world who need help now.

The fundraiser will conclude on March 31, 2012. Please visit smallvillewomenbighearts.snappages.com for more information.
