July 23, 2011: New Superman Animated Movies Announced

San Diego Comic Con During the panel discussion following the world premier of the upcoming Batman: Year One animated film Friday night, producer Bruce Timm announced that Superman will be featured in all three of the company's upcoming animation projects.

The first will be Justice League: Doom, influenced and loosely based on the JLA: Tower of Babel story arc by Mark Waid and Howard Porter. The film's screenplay was the final project written by the late Dwayne McDuffie who previously adapted All Star Superman.

Next year will also see Superman taking the spotlight again in an adaption of what Timm described as Superman vs. The Elite, which fans will remember as the "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way?" story from Action Comics #775 by Joe Kelly and Doug Mahnke and Lee Bermejo.

The final project Timm announced was a two-part feature film based on Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns which famously features an intense battle between Superman and Batman.

Timm did not state any release dates, but that all three projects are currently in production.

For Batman fans, Batman: Year One will be released on DVD, Blu ray, digital download and on demand on October 18.
