July 21, 2011: SDCC - Grant Morrison Panel

San Diego Comic Con The panel began when Grant Morrison entered the room on his own and sat in the middle of a table designed for 10 people, by himself. He jokingly said he's going to have to moderate this panel himself, and just started answering questions.

Here are a few SUPERMAN related highlights of the panel:

He has a 16 issue run planned for ACTION COMICS.

It will be better than ALL STAR SUPERMAN.

The question was asked if there would be a follow up to ALL STAR SUPERMAN, he said no, but said that ACTION may touch upon a few things from ALL STAR SUPERMAN.

ACTION COMICS will take place about 5 years in the past, before Justice League #1, and will catch up with the regular current timeline in issue #7. It will then jump back and forth.

When asked about his thoughts about the recent success of the Batman films compared to that of the Superman films, he believes that people like Batman better because he's cool, sexy, and has a lot of money. Superman has a boss, works in an office... no one wants to be him. He is "shackled" that he has to represent the flag and patriotism.

He will not be adapting any past Golden Age or Silver Age plots to his run on ACTION, but there will be familiar elements.

Superman is a social reformer, but Clark Kent works just as hard as Superman. He's an investigative reporter, and helps bring down injustice, just like Superman.

Touching upon the recent reports that Superman will be more brooding than before, Morrison said he's only darker because he stands for justice. His ways may conflict with the law because he seeks justice.

Superman isn't Batman, he won't be sitting on a gargoyle, like Batman. He is pro-active, a young powerful guy to help people.

Which character does he enjoy writing better, Superman or Batman? After coming off his Batman run, he says that Superman feels more "fresh." Currently, he gets more of a "buzz" writing for Superman.

That was the extent of Superman coverage for Thursday, we'll have more on Friday's official SUPERMAN panel.
