In a new interview with Empire Magazine Zack Snyder says he wasn’t surprised Superman and Batman fans weren’t impressed with director’s decision to have the heroes kill.
“The only reason I’m not surprised is that some people got brainwashed by a bunch of material that’s not consistent with true canon. And that’s fine. They’re on their own journey”.
Snyder doesn’t clarify what “material” he thinks fans have been “brainwashed” by, or what he considers “true canon”.
In “Man of Steel” Snyder had Superman snap Zod’s neck, killing the Kryptonian General, while in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” Superman appears to kill a man holding Lois Lane at gunpoint.

Yaaaaawn. My biggest issue wasn’t even the fact that he killed zod, but that he was written as a wordless wonder. Many have said it before, but during the metropolis fight, if you showed superman trying to save civilians or keep them out of harms way and have him losing the fight as a result, then I would have been more okay with the snap. I want to like Snyder, I will give credit where it’s due and think he is second to none when it comes to visuals, but his characters never have depth. They look right off the… Read more »
Well said and yet more proof for why he was just not the right person for Superman.
This guy… I don’t know why Superman Killing Zod gets so much play. Frankly, I think the tornado scene with Clark letting Jonathan die is the way bigger sin of that movie, and pretty much ruined that Superman before he even donned the cape. There could have been some interesting threads to follow with Superman killing Zod if they’d followed up with it in a sequel, but obviously, that never happened. Jonathan’s death was just stupid, though.
I’ll never understand that scene. It would have been better if he made his own decision to save Jonathan, but then have Jonathan die anyway … and in his dying breath, tell Clark he was wrong for making him hide his gifts.
Superman did kill an alternate-universe Zod in the comics, but doing so traumatized him, leading to the Exile arc. His tortured emotional state was a totally reasonable outcome when someone betrays their most deeply held beliefs. Man of Steel showed us almost nothing about how the act affected his conscience, and by the end of the movie it’s as though the event never happened. Agree with the criticism of letting Jonathan die. But Snyder’s and Goyer’s greatest mistake about Superman was turning him into a megapowered John Galt. When Kal-El intimidates someone in the comics, it’s in the service of… Read more »
Zack Snyder is one of those auteur hacks that tries to convince you that his movie ideas are smarter than you believe them to be – and if you disagree with them, then something is wrong with you.
His whole shtick is, “There’s Murderin’ Up in These Parts Here” and you need to go along with it. And he’s too busy trying to be an Edgelord to tell a story worth watching.
That’s been his MO since Sucker Punch.
Well,…..I liked Snyder’s take on all the DC characters. IMO, made them more, dare I say, “realistic” when put into situations where they were threatened in severe ways. I suppose going forward if the characters and their adventures are more closely associated with cartoonish adolescent story lines, especially Superman, Snyder’s versions stand above the rest. I’m just sorry we never got a stand a lone MoS sequel.
