March 6, 2024: James Gunn Films First Scenes for New "Superman" Movie
Director James Gunn, discussing the commencement of filming for the 2025 "Superman" movie, revealed to Norwegian outlet VG that he shot the initial scene in Svalbard, Norway. Gunn emphasized the city's unique Arctic ambiance, describing it as a beautiful location with a distinctive landscape not found elsewhere. He highlighted the natural beauty and varied terrain as key factors that led to choosing Svalbard for Superman's Fortress of Solitude in the DCU.
"We have filmed the first scenes [in Svalbard] which show Superman fleeing to the Fortress of Solitude. We wanted a place that was beautiful and felt like being in the middle of the Arctic, so we looked at several places in the world. But there were many things that sold Svalbard for us over the other places. First, there is the natural beauty. But there's also the fact that you'll find a varied landscape here that you won't find anywhere else. Nature gives a special feeling."
The cast of "Superman" features David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer.
Directed by James Gunn, "Superman" is scheduled to be released July 11, 2025.
