January 23, 2024: Ta-Nehisi Coates/J.J. Abrams Superman Movie Still in Development Says James Gunn

James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has confirmed once again that the Ta-Nehisi Coates/J.J. Abrams Black Superman movie is still going ahead.

Responding to a question on his Threads social media account, Gunn said "Yes" when asked if the "Abrams Superman Elseworld project" is still in development.

Back in May 2023, speaking with io9, Gunn revealed that "Superman: Legacy" doesn't necessarily mean that that other film won't still happen.

"Those two things are totally unrelated," Gunn said. "That's an exciting movie. I know that Chantal Nong, who is the executive on that project, is extremely excited about it. So if it comes in and it's great, which I haven't read the script, and if the timing is right, that could absolutely happen. That's totally unrelated. It would be an Elseworlds tale like Joker."

That still seems to be the case as of January 2024.

From what we know, the movie is supposed to be all about a black Kal-El/Clark Kent, with Michael B. Jordan as the actor long rumored connected with the role.
