Legion of Super Heroes in the 31st Century #17

August 18, 2008: J. Torres Talks "Legion of Super Heroes in the 31st Century"

Superman Homepage reviewer Adam Dechanel caught up with writer J. Torres to ask him about issue #17 of "Legion of Super Heroes in the 31st Century" and the future of the title.

Q: Which Legionnaires will be showing up soon? Plenty sported on the recent covers but they don't seem to get much 'screen time'.

A: In terms of ones we haven't seen before, or haven't seen too much of... well, Dream Girl appears on the first page. And Vi gets a couple of lines this issue.

Q: Will Supergirl be showing up sometime?

A: Not in any of my stories. Not sure about the other guys.

Q: What do kids think of your work?

A: The kids I've met at conventions seem to really enjoy the book!

Q: Is Brainiac 1.0's code taking over his ancestor?

A: That would be telling.

Q: Will we see Clark experiment more with his powers?

A: He's already been Superman for a while by this time. Unfortunately, we've run out of time for more "coming of age" type stories.

Q: What is your writing process?

A: I generally come up with a loose plot, flesh it out into a 20-page "outline" of sorts, then go full script. The number of drafts I go through depends on (a) how happy I am with the story (or not); (b) notes from my editor; and (c) how much time I have (i.e. depending if I've cut it close to the deadline, if an artist is waiting for a script, etc.).

Q: Who's your favorite Legionnaire?

A: It seems to change everyday, but my top five probably includes Lightning Lad, Saturn Girl, Bouncing Boy, Brainiac 5, and Superboy. Er, man.

Q: The 'younger audience' books seem to be undergoing a revitalization with Billy Batson, Super Friends, Supergirl and Tiny Titans all popping up suddenly Any surprises in store for the Legion that you can elaborate on?

A: None that I'm aware of.
