Superman's Birthday

February 29, 2008: Celebrities Wish Superman a Happy Birthday!

Greetings compiled by Steve Younis & Barry Freiman

On this joyous occasion it's only fitting that Superman receive birthday messages from personalities and celebrities who have been a part of the Superman family since 1938.

Birthday Messages:

"Happy birthday Superman! Thank you for being such a great role model and an inspiration for people everywhere. You have been so close to me, so much a part of my life for so many years, that you are like family.
Be happy and enjoy your 70th birthday!"
Joanne Siegel
(Wife of Jerry Siegel)

"Happy 70th birthday to my big brothers Superman and Clark Kent! You have lifted the spirits of people around the world and made us believe that no matter how humble or ordinary we may appear, there is something magnificent and powerful inside us.
With love from your "sister","
Laura Siegel
(Daughter of Jerry Siegel and Joanne Siegel)

"It is indeed a happy and joyous occasion to help celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Superman, Having been closely associated with the Man of Steel for 60 of those 70 years, I have seen many changes in the world - and in Superman - but I have always also seen that the love fans have shown for the character has never dampened, never waned. I believe we all aspire to the ideals set forth by the mysterious vsitor from another planet. Superman, may you live forever!"
Noel Neill
(Actress who played Lois Lane in the two Superman serials in 1948 & 1950, Lois Lane in seasons 2-6 of the Adventures of Superman TV series, amongst numerous other cameo appearances in Superman TV shows and movies, including Gertrude Vanderworth in Superman Returns)

Superman's Birthday "When I was six years old, I loved listening to Superman on the Radio. Now, I'm Seventy Five Years old and I still love Superman..."
Bob Holiday
(Superman in the 1966 "It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's Superman!" Broadway Musical)

"What a fabulous celebration and 70 isn't old at all. Superman remains timeless and his morals and good manners and humanity remain an important message. I have personally been very honoured to have had an affliation with the great man. I have also had the pleasure of meeting some pretty fabulous Superman fans... If only the world could be populated by the likes, we wouldn't find ourselves in the mess we're in eh?"
Sarah Douglas
(Actress who played Ursa in Superman: The Movie and Superman II)

"Wow, seventy years of history. What a privilege it has been to be involved. Imagine doing a set of films over thirty years ago and they are as good today as the day we did them. A few generations of people and Superman I & II are still bringing enjoyment to so many people. I am truly proud to have been associated with these projects. And thank you to all the loyal fans for their support."
Jack O'Halloran
(Actor who played Non in Superman: The Movie and Superman II)

"Happy Birthday to the one and only Superhero who has his birthday on a leap year, the 29th of February. Your wonderful altruistic nature that propels you to care more for others than yourself is truly an inspiration, as was proved by Chris Reeve, who had the honor of being the Man of Steel in all facets of his life. I'm confident that gradually humanity will learn from your generosity and sense of self-sacrifice. I know that you have been the one who steered my life towards the light. I now understand the values that make a true immortal hero. So, from a student to the master, Happy 70th and definitely, many, many, many returns."
Ilya Salkind
(Producer on Superman: The Movie, Superman II, Superman III, Supergirl, and the Superboy TV series)

"Dear Superman, Happy birthday! At 70 you still look as young as ever and all of us would wish to be Kryptonians to be the same. It is also 30 years now since the first film we did together was released. Judging by the success of the wonderful box released by Warner, one can safely say that the film has not aged either. Looking forward to the next 70 years."
Pierre Spengler
(Producer on Superman: The Movie, Superman II, and Superman III)

"Christopher Reeve was not only a modest gentleman, but was also the true definition of a 'SUPERMAN' both on screen and in private life. I am honored to have had the pleasure of meeting him during the making of Superman II and III. Memories I'll always cherish."
Ken Thorne
(Composer on Superman II and Superman III)

"I would like to thank Jerry & Joe for picking up a pencil that fateful day in 1932 and giving birth to a cultural icon of meteoric proportions. May you get the recognition you deserve. Blessings to you both wherever you are!"
John Newton
(Actor who played Superboy in the first season of the Superboy TV series)

"Love and Best Wishes to Superman and his creators on CK's 70th birthday. Thank you to Jerry and Joe for creating a Mom for Clark Kent and to Deborah Joy LeVine for her vision of a Martha Kent I was lucky enough to personify. Happy Birthday Superman. Here's to 70 more!!"
K Callan
(Actress who played Martha Kent in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman)

Superman's Birthday "Hey, Superman, thanks for setting me up with my wife! I'll try to do a good job on your covers."
Alex Ross
(Comic Book Artist)

"On this day, the ones we really owe thanks to are Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Without them, I wouldn't have my favorite dreams. Happy Birthday to the first."
Brad Meltzer
(Comic Book Writer)

"Seventy years. What do you say to a man who's been around for seventy years but is still in his thirties? A man who has two fathers and no mothers if you look at it one way (Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster), and two full sets of parents (Jor-El, Lara, Ma and Pa) if you look at it another way? A man who's met John F. Kennedy as an adult and as a teen, and who is now too young to have met him even as a baby? A man who's adventures on at least four Earths have been catalogued over the years -- and that's not counting all the variants, or the TV, radio, movie, cartoon and prose adventures? It's truly been a never-ending battle -- a battle that's seen more worlds, more wars, more action, adventure and romance and friendship than your average seventy-year old would see in a dozen lifetimes. And yet Superman does it all while still looking sharp. I guess all there is to say is Many Happy Returns, Man of Tomorrow! Returns from the dead, returns to Krypton, returns of dear friends and deadly foes...well, maybe the deadly foes aren't exactly "happy returns" for you, but your audience looks forward to the next seventy years of truth, justice and the American Way anyway. Happy Birthday, big blue!"
Kurt Busiek
(Comic Book Writer)

"Happy Birthday, Man of Steel! Of all the things you represent and all the grandeur and heroism you bring to a world sadly lacking in both, of all the things you've given us, I value your inspiration and your hopefulness the most. Carry on, Last Son -- the world always needs saving, and we all need someone to aspire to."
Greg Rucka
(Comic Book Writer)

"Happy 70th, Superman, you don't look a day over 29! Thank you for showing us the best we can be - as you are perhaps the most human of us all."
Jeph Loeb
(Comic Book Writer)

"When I was just a kid I watched the Adventures of Superman and became a fan. That grew into an obsession for comics which led to my career. I've created hundreds of characters who have gone onto TV, movies, animation, games and more, but when asked my favorite comic character, I always say Superman. It was true when I was a kid and it's still true today."
Marv Wolfman
(Comic Book Writer)

"Happy Birthday, Superman. My mother-in-law turned 70 just last year and still looks hot so you have nothing to worry about. Thank you for a great childhood."
Mark Millar
(Comic Book Writer)

"To Superman: I like you because you have a Bizarro version of yourself and that's okay, because you have a super-dog with a cape, because you like to pull practical jokes on Batman, because you've saved the planet more times than we can count, because you're the most powerful being in the universe and yet you still love Lois Lane and Jimmy and Perry and the rest of us, and most of all because you let me write about you for awhile and didn't melt my brain with heat-vision over the results. Happy Birthday, Kal-El!"
Mark Verheiden
(Comic Book Writer)

"The very first comics I can remember are all Superman comics. Everything from Worlds Finest, Lois Lane, Action Comics, Superman Family and so on. The first argument I ever got into was with a friend of mine who happened to be a "Marvel comics" person. He told me that if you get the Hulk mad enough, he could take Superman in a fight. I remember thinking that there was no way Hulk could do this because Superman would use his heat vision and aim it right into Hulk's eye, burning it out and then fry a hole right through his brain... and if that didn't work, he could just take Hulk for a ride into space and have the lack of oxygen make Hulk pass out, then Superman can just snap his spine in half and sever his head and throw it all back towards the planet and everyone could watch Hulk burn up in entry. Well, this might give you a clue why I am now making a living writing comics... and I want to thank Superman for never resorting to that kind of violence. Happy birthday you super classy guy!"
Jimmy Palmiotti
(Comic Book Writer)

"Happy 70th Birthday, Supes. You continue to prove that some people only get better with age. May you still be flying high at 100....no doubt you will be!"
Al Gough
(Smallville Executive Producer)

"Happy 70th Birthday, Kal. You were my hero as a child, and thanks to you, I've become one in my adulthood. Now if I could only age as gracefully as you. And be able to actually burn holes in things with beams from my eyes."
Yuri Lowenthal
(Actor who voices Superman in "The Legion of Super-Heroes" animated series)

"Superman has been a big influence in my life especially for the past 28 years since I was the one to transfer over 1200 radio shows to audio tape. I was also honored to be a friend of Kirk Alyn and his wife for 17 years and inducted him into the hall of fame of the National Broadcasters Hall of Fame Musem in 1995. I am sure Superman will endure forever so Happy Birthday from your biggest fan."
Fred Shay
(Curator National Broadcasters Hall of Fame)

Superman's Birthday "Happy birthday to the Big Blue Boy Scout! With x-ray vision, does anyone bother wrapping your presents?"
Jake Rossen
(Author of "Superman vs Hollywood")

"When it comes to heroes, there is none greater than Superman. He does what's right, no matter what. He wants to inspire others. He stands up for those in need and fights relentlessly for them. He chooses responsibility!"
Scott Cranford
(Official town Superman for Metropolis, Illinois from 2000-2007)

"Happy birthday to Superman. Having gone from a lifelong fan to participating in a very limited way in the Superman legend via our soundtrack box set, I just want to say how struck I am by how powerful and iconic Superman continues to be. I witnessed first-hand how seriously Warner Bros. and DC Comics take all Superman licensing -- as well they should -- and how fervently the fan base responds to the Superman movies and soundtracks. Let me put it this way: I have spent the last 10 years producing collector's edition CDs of vintage film scores...When asked what I do for a living, it can take some time to explain. Recently, I have been able to say, "We're doing a CD box set of music to the Superman movies." Everybody, no matter how inattentive to pop culture or movies, knew instantly what I was talking about. Thank you, Superman -- you didn't get me any dates, but you are rightfully a great and likable guy, and I am grateful to you, your creators and your fan base for a wonderful experience."
Lukas Kendall
(Co-producer of "Superman: The Music" CD Box Set)

"Dear Superman,
You have been an inspiration to me since I was six years old (1967). As a young boy, I borrowed many of your capes (bath towels, really) and "flew" down every sidewalk in my neighborhood! I've watched you as George Reeves, first on a black and white TV every morning before elementary school, and now in my high-def home theater (beautiful!). I've soared hundreds of times with Christopher Reeve as the silver screen Superman, and taken joy in your Gift of Flight ever since.
Superman, you will always be within me; reminding me to do the right thing, to treat others with respect, to find strength in times of great challenge, and to keep looking forward with hope and determination.
Happy 70th Birthday Kal-el! I'm already looking forward to your 75th! Let's hope younger generations will always think of you as our greatest hero.
Your Super Pal,

"Happy birthday Superman! Can't thank you enough for all the great people you've helped me meet over the years. It's because of your example that many people strive to be better people... If only you were really real. The world could do with someone like you around. Thanks too to Jerry and Joe for their creative genius all those years ago."
Steve Younis
(Owner and Editor-in-Chief of SupermanHomepage.com)

"Hey, Supes! I know you're probably still mad at me for last year, where I shared that VHS copy of the time you got drunk on Red K and wore Ambush Bug for a hat, but hey, if there's one thing we know about you, it's that you're a sucker for forgiving people. Hey-oh! But seriously... please call me back some time! I'm not much of a math guy, just a writer, but my calculator tells me that seventy divided by four is seventeen and a half years old. So I would caution you, eight years from now, not to take up smoking. Beyond that, heck, I'd say with age comes wisdom, but you've taught me practically everything I know about my own pragmatic philosophical understanding of how to regard the world around me. You don't give people heat vision colonics, you offer them hope, and that's a damned sight better than funnies on the internets, which is my forte. It has been an honor to write a story featuring you, essays about your exploits, and to meet the tens of millions of people who know you as I do, as a moral arbitor for hope. Seventeen, seventy, pretty much ageless if you ask me. And that's kind of why we're all here, every day, celebrating. Oh! You hear that? That's probably your package. I hope she looks as much like Lori Lemaris when she jumps out of the cake as the brochure said. Apologies if she looks like Granny Goodness.
Happy Birthday, you big lunk."
Neal Bailey
(Superman Homepage Assistant Editor & Staff Writer)

"Superman, I know you're just a fictional character. But you've brought me joy and escape when I've needed it. Your inspiration has led me to strive to be a good and decent person. Even your non-costumed career as a writer led me in that direction with my life (or is that your costumed career? I never can keep it straight anymore which one's supposed to be the real you though Clark and Superman are equally real to me). Your ideals, expressed never more eloquently than by Christopher Reeve, both in and out of character, have kept me 'going forward' and 'looking up' as I go. Thanks, pal. Here's to 70 more - well, for you anyway."
Barry Freiman
(Superman Homepage Assistant Editor & Staff Writer)

"Dear Kal: Thank you. For everything."
Jeffrey Bridges
(Superman Homepage Staff Writer)

"For thirty-two years now you and I have shared the same birthday and frankly I am tired of the competition. Sure you're the Man of Steel. Sure you can leap tall buildings in a single bound. Sure you are the very embodiment of truth, justice and the American Way, but you also steal the focus off the important one here; me. So the time has come for you to stop stealing my birthday thunder and give me back my special day!
Actually I am just kidding. Frankly I am honored that we share this day. For as long as I can remember you've been a part of my life, whether through the movies or television or animation or the comic books. I can honestly say that I am a better person today because I've been a fan of yours. You've seen me through the good times and bad. You've provided endless hours of entertainment. I can never thank Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster enough for creating you.
Happy birthday, Superman. I was there for fifty. I was there for sixty. I'm here for seventy and hopefully I will be there for one hundred.
Have a great day, big guy!"
Michael Bailey
(Superman Homepage Staff Writer)

"Hey Clark,
Birthday time again huh? Well it's a pretty big milestone and I hope you'll have many more, entertaining millions for years to come. You know Lois' cooking, so don't overdo it on birthday cake!
Your friend,
always,"
Adam Dechanel

"Happy birthday, Superman. The world wouldn't be the same without you, my friend. Thanks for everything."
James Lantz
(Superman Homepage Staff Writer)

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUPERMAN!
I can't even imagine what life would be like if you hadn't been born big guy! I mean, my wardrobe alone would be mostly nothing. Maybe some Jeans and a Flyers sweatshirt here and there, but as for T-Shirts, forget about it!
My home and office decor? I'd have only the shots of my family (which are nice) to display if it weren't for you.
And most of all, how would I know how I should try to conduct my life if you weren't around?
Happy Birthday Supes, you're the best there is!"
Scotty V
(Superman Homepage Staff Writer)

And last, but not least...

"I want to wish Superman a very happy 70th birthday! The 70th anniversary of the creation of Superman has made me consider why Superman has endured for so many years. Of course, his super powers are a big part of the appeal. It would be fun for children as well as adults to imagine having x-ray vision and super strength and being able to fly and to run faster than a speeding bullet. But I think there is more to the fascination with Superman than just his super powers.
I saw an interview with Christopher Reeve in which he states that he found, in playing the dual roles of Superman/Clark Kent, that he actually had "much more of an affinity for Clark". He said there's only one guy who flies around in the blue suit, but the rest of us can relate much more to Clark Kent. Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster have talked about how it was for them growing up, being shy, not always knowing what to say, feeling awkward around girls. It was a great fantasy for them that this shy, awkward guy with glasses was actually, underneath, someone with all these super powers who would use these abilities to do good in the world. I think this idea appeals to all of us.
Most of us are, of course, more similar to Clark Kent. As human beings, we are flawed, we are not perfect. The character of Superman gives us something to strive for, gives us hope that we can always do better. We will not have the physical powers of Superman, but we can be better by doing good in the world.
The character and legend of Superman are very dear to me. I portray Superman in Hollywood almost every day of my life. I do it in tribute to all of the people who have portrayed Superman, such as Kirk Alyn, George Reeves, Bob Holiday (Broadway musical 1966), Dean Cain and Brandon Routh. Most of all, I portray Superman in tribute to my idol, my hero, Christopher Reeve. He brought the character of Superman to life for me. His on-screen portrayal of the Man of Steel was incomparable. But Christopher Reeve was even more of a Superman in real life. He displayed incredible courage in his battle against spinal-cord injury. He was a SUPER MAN. Although he never walked again, due to his efforts, there have been great advances in the field of spinal cord research. This amazing legacy left by Christopher Reeve will live on. He has shown us that, in some sense, there is a potential Superman in all of us.
Happy 70th Birthday Superman. You are truly immortal and you will live in our hearts forever."

As a kid, I used to wrap a towel around my neck and run around my parents' house believing that I could fly. Sometimes, I would annoy my brothers and sisters but I wouldn't care. My first vhs tape as a gift was of the old Fleischer Studios Superman cartoons given to me by my parents. I still have that tape to this day and just a couple of years ago I received the same cartoons in dvd format from my best friend. It was with these cartoons that I became a true Superman fan. For 20 years, you have helped me thru rough times. I have also celebrated the best times with you by my side. While in Iraq, you helped me stay positive even when everything else around me was falling apart. For all of this, I Thank You. Happy Birthday my friend. May you have many, many, many more so that my children may also enjoy your presence.

Happy Birthday kal El/Clark kent. "They are good people if they want to be Kal el, They only lack the light to show them the way!" And you sir, have been the light and the shining star throughout the last 70 years. you have turned our attention to the things that matter most, your altruism should be bottled, replicated and shared for all, at least then we may have a hope of saving ourselves from the brink. You saved my life when i was 4, never got a chance to say thank you, nut when i was in a coma and dying with viral meningitis, a mate of yours, Chris Reeve, was going to come and visit me in hospital. apparently when being told that and having the S pin put next to in bed that Chris Reeve gave to me i started coming out of that coma. So i would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the inspiration, and guide ens through the darkest period of my life, and if any of the Reeve family read these comments, although you do not know me, I feel like i have known you, through all the books that Chris wrote. so to you i would like to say a HUGE thank you, As not only was Christopher reeve a man who played the role of superman, rather he transcended the character to reality, to our world, so the man who played superman became superman, and saved my life. Tahnk You, and "GO FORWARD!"

WOW. 70 years. If only you were real, Big Blue. As stupid as it sounds, sometimes I look up to the sky, and imagine you up there, taking care of us, or damn, just saying hi.

I think there's NO other fictional character in the past, present or future history of this planet that people want to be real as badly as you. You're the one and only, SUPERMAN. The true inspiration for all of us, and the only one who can make us believe that a man can fly.

Don't ever stop being there and taking care of us, Kal-El.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUPERMAN!

Dear superman

no other fictional charecter has had an impact on my life in such a short time as you. I havent been a fan of yours for very long. as an African American you are a super hero I can identify with the most , you like me are a minority who embraces his heritage. the s shield you so proudly wear reminds folks of your proud kryptonian race and what contribution they can be to america. I was never really a spiritual man until I again became a fan of yours by learning of your origins inspired me to attend church and learned about the saviour of man kind Jesus Christ.
Both Jesus and you showed me by your courage to stand for whats right and aspire to be better than what you are.

to Superman, Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, Richard Donner, Bryan Singer, Bruce Timm, Dan Jurgens, Max Fleicher
Jerry Seigal and Joe Shuster and most importan Jesus Christ I say thank you and happy birthday may you be around after us all superman.

I have so many awesome memories of my life that involve Supes.

I still have a picture of me when I was 4 in an outstanding, homemade (respect to moms) Superman costume I wore for halloween and all the time I was allowed to afterwards-until it didn't fit-swooshing around imagining what clouds on my face would feel like. That costume is up there in my all time favorite memories and it's all thanks to the Big Blue Boyscout.

Another memory that I'm sure will always be with me (and those that know me well have heard many, many times) and is easily in the top five for life,

A year or more after Superman II came out my dad took me to a drive-in that was playing Superman I and II back to back (respect to pops). At the time I was about 3-4 years old and I still remember that night so clearly. The place was packed and parked right next to us was a van full of teenagers who rigged the sound up to their boombox and cranked up the volume. My dad let me sit out on the roof with a sleeping bag for both movies. The second I saw Chris Reeve in the suit soaring in the sky I was hooked (my dad still says that was the quietest/stillest I ever was at that age).

From that night on I wanted to be like Superman so bad and since I couldn't have the powers-many bruising experiments later I figured that one out-I decided to emulate the man himself. Because of Superman and Clark I've strived to be a good and honest person.

Lets think about that for a second, because of a beautiful piece of fiction I've tried to be a good person in reality.

Happy Birthday, Superman. There can never be another like you. Thanks.

-Fan for life.

Happy Birthday to Michael Bailey and Superman (Kal-El, Clark Kent, the first Nightwing, etc.).

As i read through these well-wishes, I notice how widespread the fandom for Superman (not Michael - though I'm sure you deserve it, Michael) is. It stretches from young whippersnappers to old far... uh... codgers. It encompasses the entire world - Superman is known and loved in practically every country. Members of all races and religions respect this fictional character and what he has come to represent. And everyone seems to have a Superman story...

He taught me how to read (Superman, not Michael - though I'm sure Michael would've been glad to, had he been in Fort Worth, Texas in 1957). I learned a lot about science in his and other DC books. Thanks to this wonderful invention of Siegal and Schuster, I learned to use my imagination as a child, and today this 56 year old child still uses that gift. And it goes without saying (but I'm saying it anyway) that my moral center was coded by what I read about Superman.

Who would've believed back in 1938 that this conglomeration of pencil swipes and ink would still be entertaining fans around the world (much less in the US) 70 years later (Superman, not Michael - though we may check in on that later).

Happy Birthday to Superman and Michael!
MichaelBailey on February 29, 2008 11:40am EST
Steve Eden: Ha! Well, yes. I've never had the opportunity to teach anyone how to read but hey, I would have given it a shot had I been around in 1957.

Thanks for the inspiration to be a better person, every day of my life.

It doesn't take a superhuman to display courage.

Thanks for showing me that.

oh and to everyone - I know Steve's not been online this weekend but I'm very taken by the # of you who've included Birthday messages and I know he will be too. I've read every comment and have an idea I'm going to suggest to Steve to ensure your comments remain with this article forever. Keep 'em coming.
