Zack Snyder Expands on Planned Lois Lane/Bruce Wayne Love Affair

Bruce & Lois

If Zack Snyder had been able to continue his plans for the DCEU with a second “Justice League” film, he explains that he would have explored the idea of a romance between Lois Lane and Bruce Wayne.

In an interview with Pizza Film School (around 1 hour, 41 minutes into the video), Snyder says, “I think in the original script, Lois and Batman got together briefly. There was like this whole other thing that everyone was like, ‘Oh my god, you can’t do that.’ Superman’s dead. We had written it, especially since I had Amy [Adams] and Amy’s, like, a genius, I really felt like we should lean on Amy, because she’s just a great actress, and I think like a force of nature. I loved the idea of setting up this sort of concept, it’s sort of like when you’re in a movie where the husband goes off to war and he’s dead and the wife moves on and then the husband appears, like, ‘I’m not dead. I’m fine.’ How do you deal with that? I was super into that concept, that ‘oh no, Superman can be brought back to life.'”

In a 2021 interview with Vanity Fair, Snyder explained that with Superman having died at the end of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” he had toyed with the concept… but Warner Bros. nixed the idea.

“The intention was that Bruce fell in love with Lois and then realized that the only way to save the world was to bring Superman back to life,” Snyder said. “So he had this insane conflict, because Lois, of course, was still in love with Superman. We had this beautiful speech where [Bruce] said to Alfred: ‘I never had a life outside the cave. I never imagined a world for me beyond this. But this woman makes me think that if I can get this group of gods together, then my job is done. I can quit. I can stop.’ And of course, that doesn’t work out for him.”

I wouldn’t have been unilaterally opposed to the idea, but I would have had little confidence in Snyder to handle it well. Didn’t like how he had Superman intimidate soldiers almost like Frank Miller’s version of Batman.

We literally just saw that play out in superman returns.

I’m glad they got away from this because it would have just been another slap in the face to superman fans… you already had Batman win the fight, dating lois after that would have been too much.

I can see your point of view about Superman Returns, and I sincerely hope that you don’t feel offended for what I am going to say next, however Superman left earth making Lois feeling abandoned by him. So she felt like moving on since he left her. In BvS Superman died, and then not long after according to Zack Snyder, Lois would’ve had her affair with Bruce. This bothers me because Superman would have been dead not even a year before she decided to move on. I mean this is Lois Lane. Lois wouldn’t do that. Lois loves Superman too… Read more »

As much as I enjoy Zack Snyder’s work, I think this would’ve have been both stupid and disrespectful to Superman as a character and to the Superman-fanbase. It seems like a teenage-bro idea. It doesn’t make sense both logically and from a storytelling standpoint to have Lois Lane in a relationship with Batman (Bruce Wayne). According the the storyline we got in “Batman V Superman”, Batman felt very bad and guilty about Superman’s self-sacrifice to defeat Doomsday and followed by his death. Batman (Bruce) also felt bad after he realized that he and Clark’s mother’s have the same name. Thus,… Read more »

You may be right. It’s one of the main reasons I did not care for all the personal relationships. Especially the on going Lois angle with Superman. I mean he’s an alien from another planet and everything regarding his Krypton physiology is compatible with humans??
