“Superman: The Movie” Still Ranked Best Superhero Movie Ever

Chris Reeve

With the release of “Blue Beetle” to theaters this past week, USA Today has published their Top 50 best superhero movies of all time, with “Superman: The Movie” topping the list in first place.

“Richard Donner’s masterpiece covers the action-packed bases, from an exploding Krypton to disastrous quakes on Earth – you know, a job for Superman. What sets it apart from all the rest of the superhero pack is Christopher Reeve’s magnificent showing as the ultimate Man of Steel. This alien is nurtured to be the best of us, embracing humanity and falling in love (see: Supes and Margot Kidder’s Lois going on a stellar first-date flight). Reeve brings so much heart to a role where, with just little shifts in posture and mannerisms, he effortlessly switches from bespectacled Clark Kent to the legendary boy scout. Simply put, Reeve was super, man.”

“Superman II” is the only other Superman film in the Top 50 list, ranked in 23rd position. Surprisingly, there’s no mention of any of the Henry Cavill Superman films at all, not even “Man of Steel”.

When this was released in 78 everything was SO different. There was nothing to compare the movie to. It was done so well without bringing in outside influences. It stood on it’s own. I find it a bit odd the S2 drops to 23 on their list, when it was in reality just as good as S1 was. But I will never forget being there opening day weekend and remembering the whole theater cheering when he saved Lois and caught the helicopter.
