War of the Supermen

April 25, 2010: Free Comic Book Day - "War of the Supermen #0" Mini-Review

By Jeffrey Taylor

It's that special time of year again when comic book readers enjoy a brief respite from their wallet-lightening Wednesdays. Every year on the first Saturday in May, customers flock to their local comic shops with the promise of free comic book loot. In the bigger cities, crowds of people arrive and are greeted by costumed players depicting all sorts of comic book characters like Superman, Batman, Spider-Man and many more. Although regular comic book readers attend every year, the goal has always been to entice customers who don't read comics to take a look and hopefully fall in love the with medium.

Free Comic Book Day began in 2001 when Joe Field's article sparked the idea in Comics & Games Retailer Magazine, a publication for retailers that ships with their orders each week. Starting in 2002, Diamond Comics, the only major comic distributor, has sponsored the event, although retailers pay a small amount (usually 12-25 cents) for the merchandise they give away.

DC Comics has figured out the best way to appease both fledgling readers who attend Free Comic Book Day and the regular collectors by offering "zero" issues of upcoming major stories. Last year we were treated to Blackest Night #0 which recapped the Green Lantern story so far and set up major plot points leading to the Blackest Night crossover event. This year, Superman fans can pick up a free copy of War of the Supermen #0.

War of the Supermen will be a four issue miniseries hitting the shops every Wednesday in May and promises a 100 minute war between Earth and the 100,000 Kryptonian's on New Krypton. The art is dynamic and the story is action-packed, plus the dialogue brings the reader up to speed on recent events. So whether readers have been following along or just starting, War of the Supermen #0 is well worth getting out of bed on a Saturday morning for.

The second half of the book offers a scene with Lois Lane writing a story at the Daily Planet. Her writing brings readers up to speed on all the major events and characters from the past two years of story leading to the climax in the War of the Supermen miniseries. Regular readers might enjoy the reveal at the end, but don't expect to be very surprised.

Don't forget to come back to The Superman Homepage after Free Comic Book Day for several in-depth reviews of War of the Supermen #0.

Bring your family and friends out your local comic shop this Saturday, May 1 for Free Comic Book Day. No matter what you choose, it's guaranteed to be worth the price of admission.
