I’m just going to point out that for a film that drops in four days, there’s still a review embargo in place. One would expect the early reviews to be trickling in by now. Call me a Negative Nancy, but that isn’t usually a good sign.

Well I think it was always going to be consistent with the other two films in terms of reviews or rotten tomatoes score.

Point of fact, social media embargo on press was lifted a day early, which is usually a good sign.

Has rotten tomatoes given a review yet?

The average is at 75% currently, which is honestly higher than I expected. Most reviews seem to be in, but it should drop a few more points as we get close to the release day.

Still, unless you’re interested in seeing how this is going to affect the DCEU at large, I would strongly recommend against using RT and review aggregate site scores to formulate an opinion. They have a terrible track record with gauging audience demands.

Has the Guardian, IMDB, and Hollywood reporter given their reviews yet? If so, what do they say about this film?

The Guardian gave it a 4/5, calls the film “exhausting, but engaging”.
The Hollywood Reporter didn’t like it, they called it “soulless”.
I don’t know about IMDB, I have no idea how their site works outside of looking up talent.

So is it a split? Half the people like it and a half of people don’t?
Well, I’m not going to make up my mind yet until I see the movie for myself. I like to be fair with every film I see. Who knows? Maybe I might like it. I guess I’m just gonna have to wait and see.

So far, the scale tips heavily on the “like” side; but it’s honestly irrelevant. Snyder is a very particular film-maker with a very particular style and this is 4 hours of that style. If you don’t like him, I doubt this film will change your mind and vice-versa.

Of course this doesn’t account for fan reaction and purism, which will also be part of the equation, when the film launches. I can’t imagine anybody that prefers Silver Age aesthetics enjoying this.

I wonder what Steve Younis will say in his review of the film when it comes out. I’m interested in seeing what he has to say about the film.

Those were pretty positive!! This looks like it’s going to be pretty darn good! (contrary to what Bailey may be gearing up to say)

As of this morning, it stood at a healthy 74% with 90 reviews on RT. I can admit it; I stand corrected.

In fairness to you, that’s unexpectedly high for a Snyder movie. Even his best work is controversial, which would prompt a studio to delay reviews regardless of quality. Currently, Justice League is his highest rated movie on RT, with the exception of Dawn of the Dead (which also sits at 75%).

That’s on the critics side, of course. Audience score is a lot more flexible and varied.

In terms of positivity; RT doesn’t seem to weight a glowing review differently from a lukewarm review; so to get the overall “fresh” rating seems to include a lot of “3/5 it’s better than the theatrical version” type reviews. That said, the needle is moved far enough for me to reconsider and give it a chance.

RT isn’t a good measure for deciding to watch a movie anyway. The rating doesn’t determine fresh or rotten, the critics themselves (or their publications) have to specifically tell RT when submitting the review whether they recommend the movie or not. There were 3/5 reviews that tanked BvS back in the day.

The system is broken, because it’s used wrong. I only follow it in these cases, just to gauge the s**tstorm that might follow. I strongly recommend finding individual critics you generally agree with and stick with them (for every movie, not just this).

It’s a handy reference; in the end it’s all subjective. I can name some critically reviled (sidenote, people need to stop giving me word of the day calendars) films that I’ve loved, and not necessarily in the so-bad-it’s-good way. And their are critically loved films that I think are absolute garbage (everything James Cameron has made that doesn’t star Schwarzenegger, seriously *beep* Titanic!) But when there’s a broad consensus, say that this film is B quality, and we can agree that the theatrical version is a C- on a good day, there’s room for hope.

Like what I see in this trailer. Won’t be long now. There is probably going to be a release on sky cinema Germany. I’ll definitely know in a day or two

A little to my own surprise, I’m excited for this. For a long time I was very sceptical, probably right up until I saw the first trailers for Snyder’s ‘JL’ and realized how radically different the tone was from the Whedonized version I saw in 2017 and wished I hadn’t. I thought the theatrical version of the film was so bad it was unsalvageable, and I just wished Snyder had been allowed to follow his own muse and complete the cycle of movies he had originally planned without studio interference … Well, this looks like the closest we’ll get to… Read more »

I agree with you regarding the JossW version. I can’t bring myself to watch it just knowing how the beginning looks the way it does.

However in BvS, I never found the Martha scene to be as negative and overwhelming as some have. It could have been done differently but I for one
never thought it a major indicator of the entire quality of the movie.

That was one GREAT trailer as well !!

It is weird how violently people – including me – reacted against the ‘Martha’ scene. I mean, when I think about ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, there are a ton of glaring plot holes in that movie, yet somehow none of them bothered me as much as that one scene in ‘BvS’. But when I really think about it, I can even justify the scene to myself these days. For instance, it really bothered me that Clark referred to his own mom as ‘Martha’ rather than ‘Mom’. But Clark did his research – he knew Batman was Bruce Wayne, and he… Read more »

Snyder indulges in his grand melodrama. The reaction to his weaker work is understandably stronger than it would be to a more nuanced creator’s weaknesses. I mean, bless his little heart because I don’t mean this as a criticism against him, he really likes to put these things front and center and point a finger at them and that makes them stand out a lot more in all their glory and occasional stupidity. It’s why his movies get better with repeated viewings, once you’ve absorbed the shock of a scene and it’s easer to process the point of it. Though,… Read more »
