I would say that in a way what happened with Cryer’s reception for Lex was similar to Michael Keaton’s reception as Batman. Keaton was mostly known for his comedic roles and he was first cast as Batman, there was a lot of doubt on how well he could play the part. But then when his Batman movie came out, he was a huge success for playing the serious Batman role. In a way the same could be said about Cryer’s Lex.
