It’s Official! HBO Max to Release the Snyder Cut of “Justice League”!

Zack Snyders Director’s Cut of Justice League to World Premiere Exclusively on the Streamer in 2021

Snyder Cut

After global passionate fan calls to action and the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement, HBO Max and Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that it will exclusively world premiere Zack Snyder’s director’s cut of the Warner Bros. Pictures/DC feature film Justice League in 2021. Snyder surprised fans with the news this morning during a live online commentary of his film Man of Steel with Henry Cavill.

#ReleaseTheSnyderCut first became a passionate rallying social media cry among fans in 2017 and has not let up. From countless press articles and hundreds of thousands of social media mentions, it became a powerful global movement among cinephiles and comic book fans.

“I want to thank HBO Max and Warner Brothers for this brave gesture of supporting artists and allowing their true visions to be realized. Also a special thank you to all of those involved in the SnyderCut movement for making this a reality,” said Snyder.

“Since I got here 14 months ago, the chant to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut has been a daily drumbeat in our offices and inboxes. Well, the fans have asked, and we are thrilled to finally deliver. At the end of the day, it really is all about them and we are beyond excited to be able to release Zack’s ultimate vision for this film in 2021. This could never have happened if it weren’t for the hard work and combined efforts of the teams at HBO Max and Warner Bros. Pictures,” said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, Warner Media Entertainment and Direct-To-Consumer.

“When Zack and Debbie shared the extraordinary vision of where Zack wanted to take Justice League, my team and our counterparts at Warner Bros. took it as a mission to solve the many issues that stood in the way,” said Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer at HBO Max, President, TNT, TBS and truTV. “Thanks to the partnership at Warner Bros. and the relentless pursuit of the entire WarnerMax team we are able to deliver this incredibly exciting moment for Zack, the fans and HBO Max.”

“Thanks to the efforts of a lot people, we’re excited to bring fans this highly anticipated version of Justice League,” said Toby Emmerich, Chairman, Warner Bros. Pictures Group. “This feels like the right time to share Zack’s story, and HBO Max is the perfect platform for it. We’re glad the creative planets aligned, allowing us to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut.”

In Justice League, fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

The Justice League screenplay is by Chris Terrio, story by Chris Terrio & Zack Snyder, based on characters from DC, Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The film’s producers are Charles Roven, Deborah Snyder, with executive producers Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas, Jim Rowe, Ben Affleck, Wesley Coller, Curtis Kanemoto, and Chris Terrio.

See WB? Fans want Routh back as Superman. Please don’t let this chance for a great Superman series go by. We want this series to happen. There’s so much good that you can do with Brandon’s Superman WB. Think of all the happy fans watching Brandon fly again as Superman. With the EPIC John Williams Superman theme. Just picture it. Brandon as Clark Kent at the Daily Planet, hears a distress with his superhearing. He ducks away from the news room. He exits the building and finds an alley, runs and does the iconic Superman shirt rip revealing his Kingdom… Read more »

So now it’s official. Zack Snyder’s version of Justice League will be coming out soon. When I get a chance to see it, I will. To those who wanted to see this movie and supported the Zack Snyder Justice League movement I say congratulations on your efforts. I truly hope that this will be a film that you all will enjoy. And I truly hope one day that a Brandon Routh Superman show in one form or the other will finally see the light of day. I’d really be disappointed that he gets to be the George Lazenby of the Superman world.

Yasss! My sincerest of deepest and heartfelt congratulations to Zack Snyder and the creative team on “Justice League” upon this celebrational milestone.

We won! DC fans rejoice.

The movie is just at 4 hours in length max (Snyder officially confirmed it sometime ago), so this could be released as one hour instalments in episodic formats (with each instalments of the movie being left on cliffhangers on HBO Max) to show how Snyder’s Cut of his “Justice League” was to meant be viewed as.

Feels like rewarding bad behavior. Years of spamming all DC social media. Attacking people who worked on the finished product. Insulting every other DC property and every movie for just getting something out. And I dont imagine all these individuals behaving better now that they got what they want.

In a way, yes, I agree. But on the other hand, I feel WB and DC completely deserved the hate and attacks. JL (and Batman V Superman) never felt like it was part of any grand vision but instead was a quick throw together to get in on that Marvel hype and, more specifically, money. And then once they started to see their efforts weren’t being received or executed well, they had a knee-jerk reaction and focus-grouped it into some mutant thing of a movie in order to try and salvage it. (and yes, I see the BvS Doomsday parallel… Read more »

I’m in agreement Randall. It’s also worth noting that Zack et al still misled as there was never a finished cut. They’re pouring 20+ million into this to finish it.

It’s more than post production not being done. They misled, plain and simple. Here’s a quote from his wife: The said version will feature unused narrative elements from the theatrical cut that the director has teased over the years, but there will also be new character development for the heroes. “What’s so lovely about this is that we get to explore these characters in ways that you’re not able to in a shorter theatrical version,” she added.

They didn’t “throw” anything together. One has to figure that with the money these movies cost everything is calculated. As usual, bad or negative news, invented as it may be, seems to always over take anything that’s good. And yes, the broken record of reading what certain groups didn’t and still don’t like about Snyder’s direction is based off expectations… but there’s no doubt there’s enough people in some category, that want Snyder’s films to fail no matter what. So the invention of themes and other miss leading false rational get brought up every time Snyder’s in the news. Now……one… Read more »

I’m thinking that it depends on what Aquaman’s part of the story will be in Snyder’s version of JL. If it doesn’t contradict with the back story he had in his own film, then I don’t see why it wouldn’t be the new cannon for the DCEU universe. Aquaman is the only one from the team so far to have had a movie that takes place after the events of JL. Wonder Woman’s new film takes place in the 1980’s, well before the events of MoS, BvS, and JL. So if there isn’t much difference in his part of the… Read more »

Totally excited to see all the Superman mythos scenes we missed out on (more of Lois, Martha, Clark, etc)… but also a brighter hope for Cavill’s return to cinematic Superman if this is received well.

At a minimum, a version with his face intact should better cement him in the minds of the general audience and hopefully open doors to our next Superman movie!

It was bound to happen sooner or later. I would have thought it would be a few years down the line just to give everything some space and sort of let all parties involved go off and do other things and let any bad blood fade away, but here we are. It will be interesting to see the differences and how much better it will be from Whedon’s. As someone who’s not a fan of what Snyder did with MOS/BvS, even I think it will be damn near impossible for his cut to be worse then Whedon’s. The theatrical cut… Read more »

I expected this, when Grace Randolph said to keep an eye out for Snyder’s MoS watch-along. Whatever you think of her, her sources often pan out. I’ve always been curious about this, for consistency if nothing else, but the more interesting thing to me is that it won’t be a work print. They’re giving him 30 mil to finish it and there is a rumor it won’t be the heavily cut down version we’d get in a theater, but the four-hour cut he intended (essentially Justice League Parts 1 and 2 combined). If this is indeed the case, this is… Read more »

No, I don’t remember that.
Personally, I liked Justice League a little bit better than I liked Batman v Superman, which in turn I liked a little bit better than Man of Steel. I figured if they kept at that steady pace, they’d make a movie I’d really enjoy by the seventh or eighth installment.
I know some people really enjoyed it, and more power to them for whatever their reasons are. But I also knew people who, even then, saw the near mythical Snyder Cut as the salvation the franchise needed.

I don’t know if Zack will use Junkie XL’s music. I have no idea and I certainly do not have any way to confirm if his music is included or not. But I’d imagine that, logically speaking, Zack Snyder (as would any director) has a vision of how certain scenes will fully play out with music and editing. Snyder started with Junkie XL’s work in BVS (as well as Zimmer’s music from MOS). Therefore, for better or for worse, I would think that “logically” Snyder would continue with Junkie XL’s music (as well as Hans Zimmer’s music) with the scenes… Read more »

I’m pretty sure some of that 20-30 mil he’s getting will be used to rescore the movie. Worst-case-scenario, he ends up reusing the Man of Steel and BvS soundtrack and just pay royalties to the composers. I really can’t imagine him wanting to use Elfman’s score.

Potentially nowhere. Batfleck isn’t happening, Ben isn’t in the right place to take upon this role. At best, we get a Henry Superman again and also perhaps they will maintain a vague connection to the DCEU in other solo movies. Maybe the Flash and Cyborg movies happen, but all of that are the best-case-scenario. Realistically, they won’t do anything else. Their DCEU experiment will be eight years old by the time this hits HBOMax and at that point, you have to cut your losses. Well everything will have to be reconfigured as Ben is no longer interested in the role and there’s already a new version of Batman being filmed. They could always use flashpoint to reset the universe. I’d be okay with keeping the current actors and just moving away from shared continuity until they know the proper way to do it. I think that a new, somewhat unspoken strategy for the “DCEU” is the “infinite earths” route… Ezra Miller on the Flash TV show… multiple Supermen in Various media – the ‘Arrowverse’ (which is the canon in the minds of many fans) has already brought the “infinite earths” concept into mainstream pop-culture. Now we have 4 different Batman Actors – Justice League/The Batman/Titans/Batwoman , 4 recognizable Supermen (the TV show did a great job with Tom Welling/Brandon Routh and Tyler Hoechlin – who will be a father of 2 in HIS universe’s Superman).. Instead of trying to Tie it all together… Read more »

I like that idea SuperDoc MD. They could do a infinite crisis movie or a multiverse movie. The Convergence story could also be a way to go. A movie with three or four different versions of Superman could be very big and successful. There’s also The Justice Society of America: Thy Kingdom Come story that could be made into a movie. In the story, the Kingdom Come Superman ends up on Earth1’s Superman’s world. He teams up with the JSA and even meets and teams up with Earth1 Superman to fight Hercules. OK, I guess I’m on board. But I’ll be honest my expectations are low. I would have loved to see Snyder’s complete vision for the DCEU pan out properly (because I really love ‘Man of Steel’, while ‘BvS’ had a lot of good stuff in it but was spoiled by “Martha” and a bunch of plotholes) but for that to happen we would have needed the planned “Justice League Part 2” – the climactic confrontation with Darkseid. I’d be okay with them doing a soft reboot with the same actors. For instance having a proper Superman sequel that stands on its own and doesn’t acknowledge much of the past films. I don’t need to see a morally grey or conflicted Superman anymore. It’s time to let him be who he is meant to be… an unabashed hero. And for myself I’d prefer a Superman that actually speaks rather than be spoken to, a true leader. I think Henry still has potential to be that type of Superman. Is it possible that the way things are now in the world, that streaming services like HBO Max will replace movie theaters for the foreseeable future? You may be right. But here’s a concerning detail. These movies cost a bundle to make. Not only do they need to make the production costs back but they need a sizeable profit as well. Is there any other avenue besides theaters that are capable of generating those kinds of profits?? Right now I don’t think there is. The only reason why were getting this in the first place is because it’s already had the millions poured into it. So all those articles and sources that said it would never be possible because there literally wasn’t enough material filmed to even make it a possibility were wrong. I mean I get that this is probably going to be very rough visually, but the “sources” made it sound like they had nothing to work with.

Love the original version. But I feel very good about the Snyder Cut. Cant wait.

As far as the production for the snyder cut goes, there won’t be any reshoots with the main cast. Mr. Snyder obtained a budget between 20-30 million for polishing the vfx, film score and adding the missing scenes he teased on his Vero account and has already filmed but never went through the post production phase. Junkie XL has done a score during filming and it seems that will be used when the the film is released. I truly believe we will be seeing a completely different film once it is released. But I kind of doubt it will be… Read more »

Yeah, I miss movie theaters as well. The two closest theaters near me closed before the virus problem started. It used to take me five minutes to get the theater. But then it went out of business. The other one took me about a half hour to travel to, and that one also went out of business. Now the only one that I can get to is about an hour drive give or take. So even when it will be safe to travel to a theater, it’s still going to be a bit of an issue for me to get… Read more »

Does the Same apply to drive in theatres? We have one here about an hour drive and so far it hasn’t been affected here since technically people are still confined within their homes inside their cars…at least here in Germany

I’m not sure. I’ve never been to a drive in theater. So it could be safer. Although I don’t know of any near my location. I do think that a drive in theater is a good idea.

I have to say.. I am definitely excited to see it… even if it will upset me.. BvS is still one of the most amazing, beautiful, terrible movies I have ever seen… I still think about it… I disagree with the decisions made and the Direction they took with it… Admittedly, I would have gone the “Marvel” route – fun and flippant, selling millions of toys, and a billion dollar Box office… the fight scene was too real and upsetting, (the “Martha” thing didn’t bother me that much ), and although I thought that Lex Luthor casting was off… he… Read more »

Hmmmm. Which brings me to the idea of selling more toys and other merchandise in conjunction with the snyder cut. A new darkseid and Steppenwolf action figure could be really tempting. Maybe we’ll also get a time traveller flash figure. A drunk aquaman figure hehehehee. And a special edition moustached Henry cavill superman figure. It’s a long shot but hey…I can dream can’t I?

On the other hand I thought BvS ultimate cut made much more sense than the theatrical cut. Why indeed would the scene of Superman rescuing the people at capitol Hill had to be cut is beyond me. I too am excited the snyder cut will finally be made public and no matter how good or bad the film is I am certainly piqued and curious how it turns out

I am really looking forward to this! I have enjoyed Aquaman, Shazam, and Birds of Prey. I do wonder how this release, assuming it’s deemed successful, will influence the coming movies after Wonder Woman 1984. I am just echoing what someone above wrote.I wonder if we will see Darkseid?I wonder if the codex in Superman will play into this movie?I would totally geek out if The Flash in Justice League is running so fast in the speedforce and somehow crosses paths with The Flash from the TV show again. This is not a theatrical release. This is going to a… Read more »

I think Darkseid will be included. Either at the flashback scene or at the very end after the JL defeat Steppenwolf according to the original script. Also I don’t think that if it deemed successful it will affect anything after WW84. Chances are that the Crises On Infinite Earths TV crossover event will be used as a template for resetting the future of DC on film and on TV and JL was in its own universe. Though when Barry met Barry on that one episode, universes and time lines were fluctuating differently and I hope they include this scene simply… Read more »

Congrats to the, “Snyder cut,” fans for their persistance. They will finally get to see the movie they have been wanting to see for 3 years. Not to thrilled about it but maybe I will be pleasantly surprised and the Snyder Cut might be good. IDK! I guess we will see. I just hope that WB/DC learns from their past mistakes. I hope the lessons are get it right the first time. DC you can’t release sub par movies with horrible CGI,horrible and non senseable storylines and think fans are not going to notice. Fans will always notice every detail… Read more »

If your talking about the JL we got then you make some valid points. But in all fairness it wasn’t DC, it was the WB! There is no way that when WB movie execs previewed the JL we got, that they didn’t see the glaring mistakes. It’s apparent that they wanted out and were satisfied with the end results, flaws and all.
