In a new cover feature interview with Men’s Health magazine Henry Cavill says he’s not done with the role of Superman.
Heving played Superman in three films, “Man of Steel,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and “Justice League,” Henry says there are more stories to be told.
“I’m not just going to sit quietly in the dark as all this stuff is going on. I’ve not given up the role,” Cavill told the magazine. “There’s a lot I have to give for Superman yet. A lot of storytelling to do. A lot of real, true depths to the honesty of the character I want to get into. I want to reflect the comic books. That’s important to me. There’s a lot of justice to be done for Superman. The status is: You’ll see.”
While there has been much speculation, and even a few unverified reports, about Cavill being done with the Man of Steel, Cavill is very much still holding on to the role.
“The cape is in the closet,” Cavill says emphatically. “It’s still mine.”
Cavill, who will star in the Netflix series “The Witcher” (which has already been picked up for a second season), put together a video showing the workout he used to build his shoulders and hamstrings to play a sword-wielding demon hunter.
Hopefully optimistic
It maybe true that the role is still his because of his contract, however it all depends on whether or not those that be at the film division of WB want to go ahead with another Cavill superman movie or not, and when his contract expires. Saying that he is still superman is one thing, however it depends on how the people in charge of the movies feel. They are the ones who decide whether or not he is still Superman. It all depends on when his contract runs out and if the people in charge of the DC movies… Read more »
It is possible that in his contract, if WB picks another actor before his contract expires, he would/should still get paid.
What a waste it was bringing a version of Batman in that is now obsolete when they could have fleshed out Superman in a solo sequel. I hope we get a new film with Henry but I’m not holding my breath. I want a quality writer and director brought on to do a proper stand alone sequel.
I absolutely positively do not want JJ abrams anywhere near Superman either. That would be repeating past mistakes in my opinion.
Good point(s) but at the time I’m sure they hadn’t counted on things turning out the way it did.
I’m not one that disliked BvS. But my opinion doesn’t over ride that you’re correct. They should have concentrated on a MoS sequel. Had they went ahead and done that, they could have introduced Batman at the end or during the credits.
I liked affleck as Batman and especially as Bruce Wayne, but I think they took the wrong approach with the film. I truly believe if BvS was slightly retooled it could have worked. I think if they cut out the Africa subplot and had the hearing be about the events of Man of steel, given lex Bruce Wayne’s motivation and made Batman a more mysterious and ambiguous side character that was being investigated by Lois and Clark then the movie would have worked a lot better. I would have loved for them to follow up the promise of that MOS… Read more »
I have 0 belief that JJ is going to do a Superman movie.
His deal with WB was about making Bad Robot productions exclusive to HBOmax.
This article is scaled down compared to the actual one. It’s a lot longer and detailed. But one things for sure,…. he’s still Superman!
I would feel better if WB made the same announcement. I love his commitment to the character though and I’m glad he puts so much into it.
I hope he can do another. Yes, he certainly looks like he jumped out of the comics…but he’s a great actor. He has matured not just in acting but his understanding of the character. Id much rather see him in a superman movie guided by his direction than by WB. 3 movies and i feel like we haven’t had enough screen time with him at all to see HIS portrayal of the character.
I’d be fine with him in the part but have zero desire to see Snyders version continued in any capacity and unfortunately that baggage is attached to Henry’s Superman. I don’t know how they would dovetail out of the mistakes that were made or if you can effectively reboot while using the same actor. But the guy clearly seems to have a genuine love of the character and still very much looks the part. If he continues in the role I would very much like to see him do more interacting as both Superman and as Clark Kent instead of… Read more »
I dont think Goyer Catches nearly enough flack as Snyder and he’s just as much to blame if not more so for that iteration of Superman. I do think it’s possible to continue on if they do a truly stand alone movie. I would love to see a movie with lower stakes and a more personal story. I’ve always said that Conduit could make for an interesting villain if done correctly. Also I think just like the comics, we need to have a writer who will tackle Superman unabashedly. I’m sick of everyone trying to turn him into something he’s… Read more »
@sundevil82 I agree with you about Goyer and for me if I am saying “Snyder version” I’m including Goyer as part of that equation.
I did not care for any of the movies he was in, but what I do care about is the Superman character. And he’s been criminally underrepresented throughout this entire Superhero Movie Explosion. DC is quick to hop on the Batman train, but refuse to give Superman any true attention. It’s a good thing Routh returned in CW, but it’s already going to focus on Kara, Barry, and the others.
I’m more excited for the tv series coming, although I’m apprehensive over wether or not he’s actually going to be treated well.
I’ll believe it when I see it.
Good Director + Good Writer + Henry Cavill = Awesome Superman movie. enough said.
Agreed
“That’s great Henry, but we aren’t making a Superman movie.” – WB
So basically even though he said he’s still Superman, there won’t be a new Superman movie until WB says otherwise.
Was there an interview this past summer at San Diego comic con that he did with a fan where he basically said the same thing? If so then he really isn’t saying anything new.
Yes basically.
WB’s DC plans extend out for several years, a Superman movie would have to announced TODAY to be released in 2024. And will enough movies in production to release 2 movies a year until 2025, I don’t see it happening.
Not saying impossible, but Henry is playing it classy, he may also be under contract still and cannot say it any other way, because it would be disclosing information.
Good play from Cavill. He’s not in great terms with WB right now, so this is a good way to remind them that he’s still serious about the role and to up his cache by empowering his surprisingly many fans.
Of course this doesn’t mean anything to us, really, because nobody’s making a Superman movie right now. This interview is pure PR, but good for him.
Likely true. But hopefully it will help the movement nontheless.
I agree, last time this happened someone reached out to WB and they punted.
They just stated they had a good relationship with Henry and had no future Superman movie plans. If he was still their Superman they would have said so.
What I want to know is, will we hear from WB’s side of this news. Have things changed, or are they still not planning on doing anything in regards of a Superman movie? Do they still want Cavill for Superman, or are they looking for a new actor? Will we hear from them soon? In my honest opinion,I don’t think that there will be a Superman movie anytime soon since there will be a new Superman tv series. But I do have to ask, is it possible that WB has changed their stance on not having two different versions of… Read more »
I think they have gotten over the whole cant have two actors playing the same superheroes thing. A new Batman movie is coming but we have Bruce Wayne on Titans and in the cross over. Not to mention 3 actors playing Superman in the cross over. As for Cavill, as much as I want another Superman movie, I am betting with no schedule clashes, he makes some cameos but that’s about it unfortunately.
What you say is true, I’m just wondering at this point if WB will say anything regarding what Henry has said.
And speaking of the upcoming crossover, I hope everyone will watch Brandon and give their full support for his return to Superman.
Let’s promote the Kingdom Come Superman for a series, and hopefully get more of Brandon’s Superman for years to come!
😀
Spidey, go apply at WB please and right the ship
Thanks for the vote of confidence sundevil82. 🙂 I’m only one voice advocating for Brandon Routh’s Superman to have his own series , so I don’t think that my voice alone will do anything. But I strongly believe that if more fans of Brandon’s also advocate for him to have a series, then I believe those in charge will listen to us fans. Please WB, CW, Sci-fi,or HBO. Please don’t make the mistake of not going forward with a Brandon Routh Kingdom Come Superman series . Please make a series Staring Brandon as the Man of Steel. Many, many fans… Read more »
