Henry Cavill’s Return as Superman in Doubt… Again

Superman

The Hollywood Reporter claims that the future of the DC Universe on film is in flux, with the third Wonder Woman film now dead in the water, and Henry Cavill’s return as Superman very much in doubt.

Even though Cavill made a return as Superman in the post-credits scene of “Black Adam,” and then made his own social media video announcement stating he was officially back as the Man of Steel moving forward, sources within Warner Bros. tell THR that that may have been premature.

It appears the “Snyderverse” is indeed dying, with characters from that franchise said to make an appearance (possibly for the last time) in the upcoming movie “The Flash”.

Due to be released in theaters on June 16, 2023, “The Flash” is supposed to feature another cameo by Henry Cavill as Superman, but “sources say there is a debate inside the studio as whether or not to keep the cameo and if its inclusion promises something that studio would have no plans on delivering.”

There appear to have been solid plans for a “Man of Steel” sequel, as “Warner Bros. was indeed developing a sequel… and actively meeting with writers. Andy Muschietti, who directed Flash, even expressed interest in sitting behind the camera for something that would have brought a tone similar to the hopeful and heroic colors of the 1978 movie directed by Richard Donner, considered a benchmark in comic book movies. In fact, the current leadership team at Warner Bros Pictures – Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy – did desire one more go-around of the Snyderverse heroes, possibly even having another Justice League movie with those actors.”

While Dwayne Johnson has been very vocal about Henry Cavill returning as Superman for the DC Universe of films to be able to properly move forward, James Gunn and Peter Safran seem to possibly have a different view.

While nothing official has been announced, this new report doesn’t bode well for fans of Henry Cavill’s Superman.

What will be…will be. Time will tell over the next week or two in terms of the ‘actual plans’. In fairness, the current DCEU is a bit of a mish mash of all sorts of stories going on and has got complex and confused in itself. I’m hoping DC strategically plan this much better than the last time and isn’t so rushed. Tricky for Henry C and Gal G though. – they have a lot of potential to bring to the roles of Superman and Wonder woman – but is it too late for them? Just an opinion – but… Read more »

Ya know I’ve been saying this, and it applies to both movie and tv. Rumors are just rumors. They’re not facts. I say this because first there are rumors of Superman and Lois being canceled. Then there were rumors of Tyler Hoechlin playing Hyperion(an imitation Superman from the Marvel universe. That rumor makes no sense to me). Now there are rumors of Cavill not coming back to the role of Superman again and the possibility of the DCU ending. So I say this again, rumors are just rumors. James Gunn hasn’t said anything about if the rumor is true. Whether… Read more »

Here what I say to Warner brothers and it’s new head of DC Cinematic universe . You cannot continue to cancel and rewrite projects.because it shortens the window that you have to produce films and also use certain actresses and actors . How many more times are you going to recast or restart this franchise. Black Adam may have not produced as high as you wanted at the box office, but the fans like me loved it. Dc needs to not cancel or reboots. they need to be focused on producing quality films that involve the current slate of characters… Read more »

As much as I want the DC Extended Universe to achieve its full potential, I don’t think that treating previous movies and its respective actors as red flags is the answer. You need to build off what you already have.

Get me off the roller coaster lol In all seriousness, I don’t envy Gunn and Safrin’s position. On one hand you want to carve out your own space and create your own version without being tied to previous incarnations. On the other hand you have people who have grown attached to characters from a universe that is ultimately looked at as a failure through no faults of the actors. And then you have wild cards like The Rock who are kind of going rogue…promoting their own film/brand. I personally would love to see Henry, Gal and Ben back in their… Read more »

All of these rumors are annoying. But the biggest annoyance of all is what comes from the “nay-sayers” and the “haters.” And it seems as though there are so many people who actively want DC to fail so much that they go out of their way to write articles to create doubt and encourage negative-thinking and negative-energy. Why can’t these so-called journalists just wait for official news either from the studio or from James Gunn? Why do they write this stuff without waiting for an official confirmation? Furthermore, as I recall, David Zaslav actively and enthusiastically wants a Superman movie.… Read more »

The journalist/YouTubers report on it for clicks… outrage brings in the numbers. Also, nothing is ever set in stone, lest we forget when Matt reevessgsted emphatically that his Batman would be part of the Dceu and Ben affleck famously stated he would play an ape for reeves. What we are told and what is actually going on behind closed doors are two different things. I have no doubt that Gunn and safrin have a deal in place like reeves, that they are allowed to create their own universe without outside interference. Wether or not they use the old actors is… Read more »
