January 25, 2008: New Chris Reeve Superman Movie CDs Coming Soon

Scores to "Superman", "Superman II", "Superman III", and "Superman IV" On the Way

By Barry Freiman

Not since I got the scoop from "Superman" movie franchise co-producer Ilya Salkind that the 14-disc Superman collection would be coming out in 2006 along with season one of Superboy have I been so excited about super-news for the Superman Homepage. Fans of the original Christopher Reeve franchise, you'd best sit down because this is pretty exciting.

This week, rumors began circulating that a special present is being put together for the fans to celebrate the 70th birthday of the Man of Steel. Using investigative journalism skills that would make Woodward and Bernstein envious, not to mention Lane and Kent, I made contact with a high-level employee at Film Score Monthly, one of the leading voices in film music appreciation.

FSM began as a one page newsletter in 1990, grew to a glossy monthly magazine, becoming an on-line publication in 2006. Along the way their own record label was formed and FSM has enjoyed great success bringing film and TV music to soundtrack collectors. Among their more than 150 releases is the score to the 1966 "BATMAN" movie starring Adam West and Burt Ward.

Now it looks like it's Superman's turn. My unnamed high-level source, who prefers to be referred to only as "Deep Shield", has confirmed for me something being referred to informally as the "blue box", which will include the most complete scores on CD for "Superman: The Movie", "Superman II", "Superman III", and "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace." Deep Shield promises the set will include even more surprises including a book detailing the history of the "Superman" franchise scoring.

While "Superman" has been released world-wide on CD, there have never been CD releases in the United States for "Superman II", "Superman III", or "Superman IV". "Superman II" and "Superman III" were released on a combined CD in Japan during the 1990s which shows up from time to time on online auction sites. No score has ever before been released anywhere in the world for "Superman IV". The "Superman IV" score was adapted and conducted by Alexander Courage but for years it's been suggested that John Williams composed new material for "Superman IV". The "Superman II" and "Superman III" scores adapted Williams' themes by conductor Ken Thorne.

Deep Shield suggests that FSM is working hard to get this set released in time for a certain Kryptonian's birthday in late February.

FSM's Deep Shield asks that FSM not be inundated with requests about this set -- responding to such requests could overwhelm their staff and result in delaying the release date. Stay tuned to the Superman Homepage over the next several weeks for more information as it becomes available. As soon as FSM is able to begin accepting orders, the Superman Homepage will be among the first to let you know.

UPDATE: The Caped Wonder website is reporting it participated in putting the set together and has announced that the set will consist of eight (8) CDs and a 160-page fully-illustrated book for US$119.95.
