December 19, 2003: Ron Garney Talks JLA & Superman

Newly signed DC-exclusive artist Ron Garney spoke with Comicon's Pulse website about his up-coming work for DC Comics and his love of Superman. Here's an excerpt from the article...

Q: You said you're looking forward to drawing Superman in the Press Release. What is it about Superman that you like so much? Is he a childhood favorite character?

A: Yes--I think he to me at least represents everything that's right about a comic superhero in its purest form. Even though he's a fictional character, he's an icon that transcends that fact. All the rest spring from what he represents - and the story of the Kents, Superman's origin, his integration into this world in spite of his alieness and his belief in humanity was really an insightful template for aspects that so many readers I think have identified within themselves at any given point in their lives. I think that's always the draw to any story really and I think his was a stroke of genius. Plus He looks so damn cool, --Y know we've seen so many incarnations that have come out over the last bunch of years but his original costume no matter what has come since remains timeless and unbreakable. Just like the character.

Q: Some people draw Superman really bulky and others draw him a little too cartoony. What is your version of Superman in the JLA going to be like? How do you envision the Man of Steel?

A: Who's to says it's 'too' cartoony or otherwise though right? Some people might like that and I think it becomes a matter of personal taste. There are artists who've drawn him certain ways that I thought looked simply awesome even though he may have been either one of those adjectives. For me all of that lies somewhere in between style and substance. I'll draw him whatever way comes natural I suppose, and what I gravitate towards. For instance I loved the way Frank Miller drew him in the original Dark Knight. But he was trying to describe the bloated bulky overindulgent society Superman represented and protected at that point. At least that was my interpretation of it. I like the bulky look but with a little more grace--and I like the cartoony look but with some contrast so well see what happens.
