Adventures of Superman #624

November 10, 2003: Karl Kerschl Talks Superman Comics

The Pulse has published an interview with artist Karl Kerschl discussing his up-coming 3-issue run on the Superman comic books in January. Here's an excerpt from the interview...

Q: How did you get on board for the "Strange New Visitor" arc running through January's Superman titles?

A: Eddie Berganza called me and said "I e-mailed you the script. can you do all three issues?" and I didn't know what he was talking about because, while I'd bent his ear about Superman at the Chicago Con, we hadn't nailed down a specific project yet. So it was kind of a surprise. All three issues are scheduled to hit the shelves in January and the deadline is extremely tight, so I had to jump in with both feet and forego any research or warming-up I might normally have done. It's been great so far, though, and I'm on schedule. I'm just getting into issue three now.

Q: What is "Strange New Visitor" about?

A: The 'Strange New Visitor' arc sees Metropolis in a state of upheaval, literally being torn up by a raging temporal storm (which, I'm told, will look great in post). At any other time, this would be a job for Superman, but sadly, he's nowhere to be found, and the supporting cast is left to deal with the crisis. In this case, however, the unpredictable dynamics of chronal turbulence and incredible irony bring a 'strange new visitor' into their midst. Will he fill the void left by our hero?

On a personal note, though, this story is really kind of an intimate look at how Superman's absence affects the lives of the Metropolis public and the people close to him. He's been missing before, and I'm sure he'll go missing again some day, but Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning have written some really nice, personal moments that have been a joy to draw.
