Shuster Estate Lawsuit Could Block “Superman” Movie Release in International Markets

A new legal battle has emerged over the rights to Superman, as the estate of co-creator Joseph Shuster has filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Comics, alleging copyright infringement in multiple international markets. The lawsuit comes just months before the highly anticipated release of the next Superman film.

Filed in New York’s Southern District on Friday, the lawsuit claims that DC Comics’ international rights to Superman expired in 2017 and 2021 in key territories, including the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. Despite this, the estate argues that Warner Bros. Discovery and DC continued to exploit the character and related properties, including television series, video games, and merchandise.

“These foreign copyright laws were specifically designed to protect creators like my Uncle Joe. That is what we’re fighting for here,” said Mark Warren Peary, executor of the Shuster estate.

Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Comics have yet to comment on the lawsuit.

The timing of this legal dispute is particularly significant, as the upcoming “Superman” movie is set to hit theaters on July 11.

The outcome of this lawsuit could have far-reaching implications for the future of Superman’s international presence, particularly as fans worldwide eagerly anticipate the return of the Man of Steel to the big screen.

I hope this gets settled soon because I don’t want to lose a good film because of this. I genuinely believe creators should be credited for their work but blocking a movie from an entire audience just feels like crossing a major line.

Honestly, this is ridiculous. I truly hope this is settled before the release of this film. We need all audiences worldwide to have an opportunity to go watch and support this Superman movie. It needs to make as much at the box office as possible.

Agreed. And it’s not right that they popped this lawsuit now. This movie was announced two years ago, and now they bring up this lawsuit?
