December 18, 2022: Superman Movie Rumor Roundup

With James Gunn announcing he's writing a script for a new Superman movie that will not star Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel, it was inevitable that the rumor mill would wildly begin turning, and that new and interesting revelations would surface.

While Henry Cavill did announce he was back as Superman after the post-credits scene in "Black Adam," it has been revealed that he did not have a written contract in place, but rather a verbal agreement assuring him it would happen. Unfortunately, that agreement was with people who were no longer in a position of power once James Gunn and Peter Safran came in to helm the newly labeled "DC Studios".

It's also being reported that Henry Cavill was paid $250k for his "Black Adam" cameo, along with an additional $250k for a cameo appearance in the upcoming movie "The Flash," but that cameo has supposedly now been cut from the film.

While no official title was given to the Superman movie Cavill was hoping to make, most people were referring to it as "Man of Steel 2". As we reported last week, a script treatment had been submitted by Steven Knight (creator of "Peaky Blinders") but the script didn't thrill executives at Warner Bros., and that was the end of that. It is now being widely speculated that the main villain of that script was Brainiac.

Calls for boycotts are hilarious. Fans stating they will not watch any future Superman films without Henry Cavill or stating that they're done watching any future DC movies are no doubt the vocal minority. It's also interesting to see people questioning whether there's any point watching any of the currently slated DC films coming out in 2023 if DC Studios is just going to wipe the slate clean. This may surprise some people, but you can enjoy a movie in isolation. Not everything has to be part of a bigger picture. "What's the point of seeing Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, or The Flash?" If you enjoy them, that's the point.

Change is never easy, and there will always be those who steadfastly oppose those changes. Calls for James Gunn to be fired and Henry Cavill reinstated are inevitable, if not futile. As Superman fans we've been here before. It seems like only yesterday "Smallville" fans were signing petitions to have Warner Bros. hire Tom Welling for "Superman Returns". Then, when Henry Cavill was cast to play Superman for "Man of Steel" there were petitions from Brandon Routh fans who were adamant that Warner Bros. hadn't done right by the star of "Superman Returns" and he deserved another "proper" Superman film. Sound familiar?
