May 24, 2022: Sasha Calle Talks About Being Chosen to Play Supergirl

Speaking with V Magazine, Sasha Calle reveals why she feels so honored to have been chosen to play Supergirl in the upcoming movie "The Flash".

"Representation in the entertainment industry really matters, and I'm super honored, honestly [to be the first Latina Supergirl]. There was a moment when we were shooting, when Andy [The Flash director Andrés Muschietti] was like, "Hey, come over here and watch this scene on the playback monitor." And I go over and I see her [Supergirl], and she's in her full glory. And suddenly, I got really emotional. Because I'm looking at that, and I'm like, "Wow, I wish I would have had this when I was little." It meant a lot to me. I turned into child Sasha watching this person [on the screen]. So it's really important. And I'm really happy and really thankful to DC and Warner Brothers for doing this now. It's so cool that we're doing this, and, ya know, it's about time."

To date, there have been only three other actors to play the role of Supergirl in live-action, with Helen Slater first portraying the role in the 1984 "Supergirl" movie, Laura Vandervoort played Kara Zor-El (before she became Supergirl) in the TV series "Smallville," and Melissa Benoist played the title role in the "Supergirl" TV series on CBS/The CW.

It is unknown at this point in time if Sasha will be playing the Kara Zor-El version of Supergirl, with many speculating that, with "The Flash" movie set to explore the Multiverse, the character seen in the film could be a different version of Supergirl, possibly Lara Lane-Kent.

"The Flash" is scheduled to premiere on June 23, 2023.
