Jimmy Olsen is Alive and Well in “Superman: Legacy”

Jimmy Olsen

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has let slip that Jimmy Olsen will appear in the upcoming movie “Superman: Legacy”.

To the dismay of many fans of Superman’s pal, a version of the character was killed off in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” leading one fan to ask Gunn on Twitter if the red-headed cub reporter/photographer would make an appearance in his new film. Gunn replied “ofc (of course)”.

“Superman: Legacy,” which will be written and directed by James Gunn, is scheduled to be released July 11, 2025.

Good! The function that Jimmy serves in the Superman cast deserves more recognition. Clark’s other friends know him as their old Smallville High classmate or their Justice League colleague. For Jimmy, Clark is the man who has built a life and career in Metropolis, the colleague who respects him and treats him as an equal, and their friendship gives a fuller sense of Superman’s civilian identity.

Personally I’d like to see Gunn’s version of Jimmy be something like Birthright or Earth One, keeping the character’s longtime enthusiasm but making him a little smarter and tougher.

Good to hear Jimmy will be back. People might not think his absence was a big deal in the Snyder films, but when you really think about it, the fact Snyder didn’t include him, and in fact killed him off in one cut of BvS, I think in a way it really does show he just wasn’t the right guy to be directing Superman.

In terms of casting, he may have aged out of the role at this point, but I always thought Joel Courtney, the main kid from Super 8, would have been a good Jimmy Olsen.

I’m glad to know that Jimmy Olsen will be in “Superman Legacy.” He is a classic character who is also an important character in Clark Kent and Superman’s life.
