James Gunn Reveals Superman Costume Shield and Movie Title Change

On the occasion of Superman’s “birthday” (February 29), director James Gunn posted a photo of the “S” shield on the costume for “Superman: Legacy”, which the director has revealed is now simply titled “Superman”.

“When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film ‘Superman: Legacy,’” the filmmaker said on Instagram. “By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was ‘SUPERMAN.’ Making our way to you July 2025.”

The costume appears to feature an “S” shield resembling the one seen in the comic book series “Kingdom Come”.

For those unfamiliar with “Kingdom Come,” the 1996 masterpiece by Mark Waid and Alex Ross, paints a chilling vision of the DC Universe’s future. Decades after the golden age, reckless new heroes, mirroring the villains they fight, leave a trail of destruction. Superman, self-exiled after a devastating tragedy, emerges as a reluctant leader, urging the heroes of old to return and restore order.

With the upcoming movie set earlier in Superman’s career than the story seen in “Kingdom Come” it’s hard to imagine how that story will be influencing “Superman”, if at all.

The cast of “Superman” features David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Maria Gabriela de Faria as The Engineer.

Directed by James Gunn, “Superman” is scheduled to be released July 11, 2025.

Awesome! Please have the red trunks and yellow belt!

Also, I hope that this S & costume are created by Clark Kent/the Kents, as Siegel & Shuster did it, and that the S actually stands for SUPERMAN this time! Siegel & Shuster got it right the first time… Brando/Waid didn’t need to “correct” them and attempt to appease himself/literalize the “messianic” nature of the character. It’s not a weird alien glyph, it is supposed to be an S that stands for Superman!

I was a bit against the idea of the Kingdom Come logo or a variation of it being used for this version of Superman because I associate it with Brandon Routh’s Superman. But after seeing this tease, it Looks great! My only real criticism I have about it, is that the red and yellow looks a bit muted. That could be just the lighting that was used for the photo though. Still, it looks in a word, SUPER! 😀

I was hoping for a more traditional Symbol to start, but of all the ‘S’ variations, kingdom come is one I’m fine with, especially given the story it is used from.

I think this will be the symbol in the beginning and then it will evolve towards the end.
