James Gunn Responds to Rumors About Kurt Russell Playing Jor-El in “Superman: Legacy”

For a few weeks now rumors have been circulating online that Kurt Russell was a possibility to play Jor-El, Superman’s Kryptonian father, in the upcoming movie “Superman: Legacy”.

In an interview with ComicBook.com to promote his role in the Apple TV+ series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” Kurt Russell responded to the rumors, admitting that he’d never heard about the rumor.

Today, via his Threads social media account, director James Gunn confirmed that the rumors are false. Kurt Russell will not be cast as Jor-El in the film.

“I love working with and directing Kurt. Hilarious and fun and talented guy. But no this was never discussed.”

Having worked with him on “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”, Gunn added that Russell was a little old to play Jor-El, “Although the mores of Krypton are certainly different than ours, I’m not sure I see him as the first-time father of a newborn!”

The cast of “Superman: Legacy” features David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer.

Directed by James Gunn, “Superman: Legacy” is scheduled to be released July 11, 2025.

I agree, he’d make a better Pa Kent than JorEl
