Reeve definitely set the bar for Superman as well as his famous Superman shirt rip. That moment when Clark runs towards the audience and rips his shirt open with the John Williams Superman Theme song playing is definitely one of the most iconic Superman moments in Superman’s movie history. One of my favorite Superman moments too. Best Superman shirt rip in my opinion.

I voted for L&C, simply because it was the defining shirt-rip when I was growing up. I think most of them are on the same level, anyway.

Well, except the CGI’ed Superman Returns one. And I get why people remember the Smallville shirt rip, the culmination of ten years of building this character up; but I just cannot un-see the sleeves of Welling’s tee showing underneath his shirt.

Don’t much care for the StM shirt-rip. It’s okay, it fits in the movie, it’s not the one my mind goes to for iconic shirt-rips though.

So I voted for the shirt rip in Superman II where he basically transforms into his costume while he’s running even though it makes no sense. I think they were trying to go for something along the lines of those Garcia-Lopez pieces where he’s in super-speed motion and you see him changing guises step by step. The effect in the movie always looked really cool to me as a kid even tough I kept wondering “Did his street clothes teleport to the Fortress? How does his hairstyle change?” Usually you cut away after the shirt rip to a shot of… Read more »

I agree! Loved that scene! And I’ll even give a shout-out to part 3’s shirt rip, that whole scene where Reeve is acting with himself is just top notch in an otherwise subpar movie.

I don’t think shirt rips in movies/tv (even in most comics) are good. The shirt rip is suposed to be for a fast change and they’re always portrayed as a simple show off. That’s why I prefer Alex Ross’ one. It looks spectacular while still totally natural.

Superman III was always the best one for me. I know the film itself is a bit of a mess and it has a whole heap of issues, but for me, it definitely has the best shirt rip. The situation was perfect as we were getting “Good” Superman finally back. It was just after the junkyard fight which, although confusing and brings up a lot of questions, was always amazing to watch for me as a kid and still to this day. After “Bad” Superman thinks he’s killed him, then for him to suddenly burst out the big machine…what a… Read more »
