Auction for Jon Bogdanove and Dennis Janke “Advance Comics #47” Cover First Doomsday Original Art

An original art piece that revealed Doomsday to the public for the first time is being sold at auction.

Doomsday

This is the first appearance of Doomsday! Created for the cover of the comics industry distribution magazine previewing the upcoming “Death of Superman” storyline, this powerful image of the Man of Steel battling Doomsday was used by New York Newsday to break the story to the world that Superman was to meet his end! The story received unprecedented mainstream media coverage and made world headlines in September of 1992, two months before the first tease of the epic storyline in Superman, The Man of Steel #17, with Doomsday’s first full comic appearance a month later in MoS #18, making this image the groundbreaking first look at the monster that would kill Superman!

“The Death of Superman” would go on to become one of the most successful storylines ever, with Superman #75, which featured Superman’s death, becoming the top selling comic of 1992 (over six million copies), and the story running through the Superman titles for the next year, changing the course of DC comics for years to come. This is definitely a piece of comics history!

Ink and dot halftone over graphite on DC cover stock Bristol board with an image area of 9.75″ x 15″. Signed by the art team in the lower image area. Red key lines and editorial notes in the right margin, small tear on the right edge, with light creasing and handling wear; otherwise, in Excellent condition.

Expected to sell for over $1,000, fans and collectors can place their bid at Heritage Auctions now.
