In yet another interview to promote the release of his new Netflix series “The Witcher,” Henry Cavill has once again reiterated that the door is not closed on him making more Superman films.

Appearing on ET Canada, actor Robbie Amell gives his thoughts on Henry Cavill’s possible Superman return:
Well for months we’ve gotten nothing, now we’re getting some where. As far as I’m concerned, it’s Henry all the way!!
And Pierce Brosnan said he was looking forward to a fifth turn as James Bond…
So he’s basically saying the same thing that he said last time. So until WB says otherwise, we aren’t going to be seeing a new Superman movie anytime soon.
WB is creatively bankrupt when it comes to their DC properties. Again I nominate you, Spidey,to go infiltrate the place!
While I agree, in fairness, most of Hollywood is creatively bankrupt. But also in fairness, I’m not sure why anyone believes they have a truly original idea anymore. (not that you were intimating as much) There are only so many stories to tell and homo sapiens have been doing so for tens of thousands of years (times every human that has ever lived). That’s not to say that one can’t tell a good story; it’s just that it’s probably not very Original. And when it comes to Superman, DC is most certainly not good at telling any kind of story… Read more »
He’s lobbying hard for the role. I would love to see him get a proper crack at it with a much better creative team behind him. I wish they had landed a deal with McQuarrie/Cavill after Fallout was a smash. The pessimist in me sees this as being nothing more than henry wanting to continue, but we won’t get a Superman film/announcement and we’ll be stuck with jj abrams or a crappy new take on Superman who ‘must find a way to appeal to modern audiences’ The optimist in me sees this and thinks ‘hey wb, see all the people… Read more »
I’m not a fan of the Cavill version of Superman, Maybe it’s the way his version was written. I don’t know.I would be willing to give him another chance if a different writer and director was brought on board. I like to try and be fair about it. If it’s the way he was written and directed, then I’ll know its not Cavill’s fault. If I may lend some words of encouragement. I know that it might not be much to go on, but maybe they will listen to what you and the rest of Cavill’s fans want if enough… Read more »
I’m with you, I don’t like the way he’s been written either but I don’t blame the actor. I put that squarely on Snyder and goyer. I will also blame singer, Dougherty and Harris for the way Brandon’s Superman was written too. Both were written without charm and said little to nothing. I don’t need a happy go lucky Superman, but I need a Superman with some sort of personality. Both Cavill and routh have proven themselves to have charm and wit and I believe that had either been given half a chance, they could have completely nailed Superman in… Read more »
For me there has to be that “ WOW! That’s Superman!” moment. I haven’t had that with Cavill. I believe it’s because of Goyer and Snyder. I mean I admit that at times in Man of Steel I almost had that moment but then the story took away from that possibility. Again I do believe that was because of Goyer and Snyder. I would be willing to give Henry another chance provided that the movie is written and directed by someone else. For Routh, that “Wow! It’s Superman!” moment came to me after he saved the plane. It was probably… Read more »
I do think that Routh had charm in Superman Returns, however what I thought was the problem with his version in that film was that they had him play a lonely version of Superman.Desperately trying to figure out where he belonged in Lois’s life and in the world. So while he did portray a hopeful side of Superman whenever he was saving people, for the most part he played a lonely one as well. That was the writer’s fault. Routh was great as Superman. The script however wasn’t so great. And it ultimately lead to no sequels for Superman Returns… Read more »
Completely agree with you about the ‘wow’ monent spidey. I’ve said it before, we never got a moment in MOS where someone could say ‘that is a complete Superman thing to say/do’ or ‘wow that was a complete Superman moment’. It never came. I don’t dislike the movie, but it really is the most generic version of Superman… it hits all the beats, but there’s no soul in it if that makes sense. No charm, no inspiration. Superman himself had no personal agency… everyone told him what to do. I don’t want a reeve Superman again, but he had a… Read more »
yup
The charm is really downplayed for Brandon. They never let him or Cavill sink their teeth into the character. It’s like they were just told to stand there posing the whole movie. All of Brandon’s good dialogue was lifted from the reeve films. I don’t get it.. does he have his own memorable lines? I just remember thinking it was perfect casting at the time and yet he was completely muted. Same thing with Henry. Why don’t they want Superman to speak?? It’s baffling to me. I don’t understand the shame people feel about Superman. Again, look to cap for… Read more »
I think that when it came to Cap, they stuck to the basics of what makes Captain America, Captain America. Maybe that’s what is missing in the current Superman films. They tried to make him relatable and realistic. But the thing is, realistic and relatability really doesn’t work for Superman. He’s a man that can bend steel in his bare hands and change the coarse of mighty rivers. It really is hard to relate to that. I want to see him be inspiring. I’m not interested in seeing if I can relate to him. I want to look up to… Read more »
They can make him realistic and relatable yet keep that wow! Factor. The problem with the singer and Snyder version has been that they wrote the character with little personality. He barely speaks. It’s hard to relate to any character like that. He might as well have been a Keanu reeves character like neo or John wick or any other silent action hero (man with no name for example). That’s not who Superman is though. He is not a silent hero and that, in my opinion, is why audiences haven’t been able to get on board with those Superman. The… Read more »
You hit the bullseye about the writing sundevil82. That’s exactly the problem. They haven’t found the right person to write Superman for movies yet. They need to find someone who knows, and understands, and respects Superman’s history. And incorporate that on film.
This is what makes this Superman website so great sundevil82. We can both share our fandom for Superman. We may have our differences about him sometimes but we both still care so much about him. You have always treated me with respect even if we sometimes have a difference of opinion. Thank you for that sundevil82. You have my respect.
🙂
sundevil82 have you ever seen the show My Hero Academia? The main character Deku looks up to his favorite superhero All Might. Deku starts off as the underdog who looks up to his favorite superhero All Might and wants to be like him. So then one day in a twist of fate, his favorite superhero All Might pass his powers to young Deku so that he too can become a great superhero. I feel like I’m just like Deku when it comes to Superman. He’s the hero I look up just like Deku looks up to All Might. I know that… Read more »
Haha we don’t disagree on very much Spidey… if anything
True sundevil82, very true.
Ha ha ha
I do admit sundevil82 that one of the main reasons why I liked Superman Returns and Routh as Superman in that movie was because of his likeness to Reeve, and that the film was part of the Superman Reeve continuity. However, I do agree with you that Routh should be given an opportunity to make the role his own apart from Reeve and this upcoming crossover is an excellent, excellent opportunity for Routh to make the role his own. I so can’t wait to see it. It’s almost here!
😀
There are way too many layers to call Superman’s writing in either MoS or BvS “lazy”, regardless of whether you think it’s the appropriate way to depict the character or not. This includes SR, despite my personal dislike of that film. You want lazy, have a look at how the CW writes him.
Additionally, we should keep something in mind; Cavill in’t going around being both aggressive and calculated when talking about Superman for no reason. He knows he is very well-liked in the role and this is his way of reminding WB this.
Maybe I haven’t been clear enough about what I have been saying so I’ll try and clarify a bit. I’m not saying the writing is lazy. What I am saying is that they haven’t written Superman to have the Wow it’s Superman moment for me. If you are wowed, then great. Good for you. But for me, I need the Wow moment to be convinced.
It makes for a pretty good syfy story in my opinion. But I just don’t buy it as a good Superman one. But you know what? That’s just me. And that’s ok. Everyone has their own preference when it comes to big blue. If you enjoy this version, then good for you. Everyone should have a version that they look up to. It’s not the one I look up to and that’s ok. You look up to this version and that’s ok too.
I try to find something to like in every version of Superman. I have some versions I like more than others sure. I try to classify them too haha… man of steel is the generic version of Superman, BvS was the meathead versions of both Batman and Superman and … I really don’t know what they were going with for Brandon’s version. I wish they had started from scratch instead of continuing the reeve story. And that suit was awful… look how much better the kingdom come one looks
I hear you dude. It would have gone a long way to show him saving civilians during the zod fight ore even trying to reason with zod… I actually had the opposite reaction of wow! When he jumped over the tanker to ‘look cool’. My reaction was ‘really?’
I find the ‘you’re a monster zod! And I’m going to stop you!’ Line to be incredibly cheesy and sounds like something A child would say while playing with action figures.
What I mean by lazy is that they’re relying on his essence to carry the film rather then the character that is actually written. Superman has no personal agency in MOS. I was waiting for a moment in the film where he definitively chose earth and it never came, nor did any impassioned speech, nor any attempt to reason with the kryptonians. It was a very paint by numbers version of Superman. Krypton. Check. Smallville. Check. Saves a bus. Check. No character moments, no personality, no interesting dialogue. everyone in both mos and BvS were talking AT him… not to… Read more »
Show, don’t tell. Characters are defined by actions more than they are by words. Again, I can sympathize with the argument that you want Superman to speak more to have that super-hero ‘oomph’, but he’s not being acted on. He chooses to save the bus. He chooses to stand against the entire Kryptonian army to protect Earth. He chooses to investigate Batman. He chooses to keep being Superman while the Africa hearing are going on. He chooses to appear in Capitol Hill. He chooses to lay down his life to save both his mother and then the city. The character… Read more »
I’m not disagreeing with you that he does that in the films, and again I like MOS, but it goes back to one of my original points though. Those are just story beats that need to be checked and it’s done in a very generic way. To me it’s the bare minimum in terms of character development. You kind of have to have those moments in there otherwise it’s not really a Superman/superhero film. I’m fine with the actions, but we never delve into why he chooses to do that. It’s just a given… I remember this movie was advertised… Read more »
I’m having a hard time understanding your needs regarding what you want or need from theses characters. Working from the bottom up, SR was made the way it was was because at that time the only real reference to Superman, movie wise, was the original Superman with CR. Without duplicating it Singer said he made it in a way that paid homage to it. I never concluded after seeing it that I’d wished Superman had more conversation(s) or needed more verbal input to any extent. There were other things that Singer took liberty with that put the movie in the… Read more »
We weren’t talking about Tyler’s Superman, but since you brought it up let me ask you this question out of sake of curiosity. What’s your opinion If they did the same thing to Henry’s Superman with domestication in the movies as they are doing with Tyler’s in the shows?
Would you feel differently or the same about it?
I mean technically he’s half way to being domesticated. He proposed to Lois. Whose to say for a sequel that they won’t do a time jump where he and Lois have been married for a number of years and they have a kid? Would you say the same thing about the film’s version of that story?
S2878…….He might have proposed to Lois but I’d be willing to bet a marriage never would have happened. It just doesn’t make sense and sticking relationships into his life is a dumb angle. To me they’d only do that to side track. Having a wife is a nutty idea when you look at the big picture of what he does. And that’s going to be a big problem moving forward with Henry. Can they erase who he was in MoS and presto, now he’s some new and improved version?
Why is having a wife a nutty idea? How is it any different than a cop or military person in the real world? People are social creatures, we seek out relationships, connections. You can’t just ignore that.
JasEl: He’s an alien from another planet. That’s what’s being ignored. Totally humanizing him just takes him being Superman farther out of his character. There will surely be enough of that barf on the CW show.
S2878……I wasn’t really meaning to directly talk about Tyler. Just about what the CW will do with Superman as a character.
As for Cavil’s role that would be as BAD! Superman as a character is not destined to have a hard day saving the world then coming home to some loving environment. It makes no sense what so ever. So yea, I would be beyond mortified if they went that way.
I see. I was just curious about what your thoughts were on Cavill’s Clark and Lois’s engagement. To be honest I always thought that Superman and Lois in a marriage added more depth to his character. I always thought that it worked for Dean Cain’s and Terry Hatcher’s Lois and Clark. And in recent years fatherhood for Superman and Lois in the comics had also in my opinion added more depth to Superman’s character. So I’m kinda looking forward to seeing a live action adaptation to that story. Funny thing though, I literally had paused Superman 2 the Richard Donner… Read more »
How so? Read a comic he’s been in a relationship with Lois since the late 80’s(not counting the new52 gap and even then they were together for a little while) and that is EXACTLY who Superman is. For a vast majority of his existence they have put the focus on the MAN, not the SUPER. His relationship has been integral to his character development for decades. His friendships with Perry White, Jimmy Olsen are all well fleshed out, it’s not all action and superheroics. Without his humanity on display there is no character, it’s just empty flash and pomp.
I’m a bit confused. I like that Clark has those ties to Lois in the comics and was married to Lois in the show Lois and Clark. So I’m not sure if you were talking to me or redcape. Could you please clarify? Sometimes I don’t know if a response is meant for me or someone else.
S2878:..I’m sure it was for me!!
Ties to Lois maybe,… but a full blown relationship with a human he could snap in two with his finger just doesn’t make sense.
Superman2878 I was talking to redcape
I see. Thanks for clarifying JasEl and redcape.
redcape How does it not make sense? His alien heritage has never been more than a reason for his powers. He has never been alien in character. Batman has said, numerous times, that Clark is more human than he is. Nigtwing has said, and this is a direct quote btw, “for a guy from another planet, he’s the most human guy I know”. His humanity has always been his most important character trait. Humans have relationships. And as I said earlier he has been with Lois almost since his creation and they have been married for almost 30 years. His… Read more »
I thought that for Superman and Lois being married was well done in the Lois and Clark series. I miss that show. Dean Cain was a good Superman. A shame that they didn’t properly conclude that series. Although I also feel that the way they left it wasn’t too bad either.
Cw writing is creatively bankrupt. You have no argument here. I don’t know why berlanti gets so much praise, it’s the same formula for every show and then on top of it, he borrows story beats from other characters and retrofits it. When he does try to be progressive (which progressive stories don’t bother me at all and I really enjoy them when handled properly) he beats you over the head with it or is so on the nose with it that it’s cringeworthy. Just to put into context… I loved in Wonder Woman when they were talking about no… Read more »
They(CW) have been creatively bankrupt for a while now. BUT….that’s what happens when they’re forced to reduce these characters and their surroundings into weekly soap operas due to money constraints. Seeing any of that transferred to the big screen would be rank at best.
He needs to fight Brainiac!!!
And yes. He definitely should fight Brainiac. 🙂
Out of all of his rogues from his rogue gallery, Brainiac I believe should be next to be in a superman film soon.
Yes…and no one better to fight Brainiac than Henry’s Superman!
Just don’t stick him with Snyder again.
I’m willing to give him one more try only if there is a different writer and director.
Sorry but I’d of taken a sequel directed by Zack any day. Yes there were a couple of things in MoS that should have been cleaned up as well.
Everyone has there own preference when it comes to Superman. You like Zack’s take. That’s ok. I don’t and that’s ok too. Now I’m willing to give Cavill one more try only if he’s being directed by someone else and if the script is from someone else as well. Again this is just my opinion. And I’m not saying that anyone else has to agree with me on it. It’s fine if they don’t. I’m only speaking on my own behalf about what I would want see or be willing to see in a Superman film or show. You want… Read more »
I say we agree to disagree.
OK fine! In reading what you and others don’t like about Snyder’s direction it appears that it’s the personality he gave Superman. I would have to question any ones sanity if they said they didn’t like Henry’s look. Who looks more Superman than he does?
I think your last statement says it all and points out the on going problem. How are they ever going to make Superman to satisfy everyone’s own preference?? They’ve gone to both ends of the scale with his character and we have all these problems. I’m not sure there can be a compromise.
“ I would have to question any ones sanity if they said they didn’t like Henry’s look.“ It sounds to me that you’re offended that I have a different view than your own. If that’s the case why? I don’t understand what the issue is of having a different viewpoint. I’m not insulting your views on Superman or anything. If anything, I’m saying that we all have a favorite version of Superman. If you like Zack’s version than good for you. That’s your preference. It’s not something that I agree about, but it’s also not something that I would be… Read more »
There’s no way to satisfy everyone when it comes to a version of Superman. There will be versions that some like, and there will be other versions that other fans will like instead. I say if there’s a version you like, than great! Enjoy it! That’s one of the main reasons why the Superman Homepage has this site. So that Superman fans like us can show our fandom for Superman. Like I said before, I hope that you enjoy whatever version of Superman that is you enjoy.
🙂
I’m pretty much talking from an over all audience stand point. People here on this site are more forgiving. But outside of here there is real hate. And that’s sad to see as there has been some great efforts put into this character. At least on the big screen.
Not offended over anything. I just made a generic statement. You have said you don’t care for Cavill’s Superman. Since he’s the most Superman looking Superman that’s ever worn the suit, and I’m talking from a muscular standpoint, I go back to what I said regarding the personality he was given in Snyder’s MoS and BvS. I can understand, to an extent, why some didn’t care for it. But I know that there are people that will say every single thing about Snyder’s Superman is crap. The same things were said about Routh’s Superman. I might not care for certain… Read more »
I admit that the CW version has had some problems over the years, but for the parts that they have gotten right, Superman saving people, saving Lois last year, and lending a helping hand to his fellow superheroes for example, I feel that those parts they have gotten right. As for Cavill, yeah I did say that I wasn’t a fan of Snyder’s take, and that I would like to see a reboot. However that being said, I had also said that if there was a different writer and director in charge of a sequel staring Cavill I’d give him… Read more »
Speaking of Routh’s Superman, did you see tonight’s episode? I saw it and there are no words for me to describe how happy I am to see Routh back as Superman. Out of all the CW superhero shows, this was the best episode ever! Seeing Routh as Superman again was amazing to see am I right? 😀
