November 9, 2004: Cleveland Looking to Pay Tribute to Superman

Cleveland, the home of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster at the time they created Superman, is looking to pay homage to two of its most famous residents, but without any clear idea just how they might do that...

"I was reading the novel, 'The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay,' and realized that the book was based on Siegel and Shuster," said Cleveland Planning Director Chris Ronayne. "Superman was created here. We should do something, especially since 2008 is the 70th anniversary of Superman."

"Something" has yet to be defined.

Ronayne will ask his department's Downtown Livabilities Committee for ideas to honor Superman in his hometown. Cleveland Mayor Jane Campbell said there might be a place for Superman in the Steel Museum, part of the proposed Steelyard Commons being discussed for the former LTV steel mill.

Ronayne said there is a lot of "unused real estate" in Cleveland that could be used for such a museum.

"The Ameritech building on Huron is the building that [Joe] Shuster used as a model of the Daily Planet," Ronayne said. "That would make a great place for a statue or museum. A lot of people have suggested a 40-foot statue on the lakefront. We'll start the discussion. We're open-eared and open-minded."

"If the community is jazzed about the idea, we could make it happen," he said.
