| October 10, 2008: Superman on TV - October 11-17 |
By Barry Freiman
This week in comics, Superman's Pa Kent met his untimely end... again. Over the years in comics, on TV, and film, Superman's father has been both alive and dead, depending on which continuity is being followed.
In the original story, Superman's adoptive parents were barely mentioned. A "passing motorist" took baby Supes to an orphanage. In the Golden Age of comics, Clark's parents advised him to keep his powers in check or people would be afraid of him. His parents' deaths compelled him to move to Metropolis and begin his double life.
Things changed again when Superboy was introduced in the comics. Both Ma and Pa Kent were alive while Clark was Superboy, there to advise him when he needed it. As the Silver Age went on, things became complicated. Clark's parents were portrayed as elderly but were exposed to a youth serum that de-aged them.
When it was time to revisit Superman's origins in the early 1970s, Ma Kent died just as Superboy was maturing into Superman, and Pa Kent followed soon after. As young Clark stood over his father as he was dying, he cries of having all these powers but being unable to save his parents. That scene was adapted, with some of the dialogue almost identical, in the cemetery scene during the Smallville sequence of 1978's "Superman: The Movie".
The Kents were revived when DC Comics abandoned all of the pre-1986 comic book continuity and rebooted Superman's continuity from scratch. John Byrne and Marv Wolfman conceived of a Boy of Steel who'd never been Superboy because his powers only gradually developed under Earth's yellow sun. And Ma and Pa survived into Clark's adulthood so they could mentor their grown-up Man of Steel.
When Superman returned to live-action television in 1992 for "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman", his adoptive parents were major supporting characters on the show with actor Eddie Jones playing Pa Kent.
Most recently, John Schneider played Jonathan Kent in 100 episodes of "Smallville" before his character had a heart attack and died, which mirrored the events of the 1978 film.
Though DC has been moving away from Byrne's "Man of Steel" continuity recently, they had kept both Ma and Pa alive the past few years - until now.
After starting with the regular listings for this week's column, I'll be focusing the remainder of this week's column on TV appearances this week by the actors who've played or voiced Pa Kent over the years.

| October 9, 2008: Is Brandon Routh Still Superman? |
There's been much speculation over the last month or so regarding whether or not Brandon Routh would be retained in the role of Superman for the next movie, seeing as how Warner Bros. has apparently decided to "reintroduce" the character rather than continue with a sequel to "Superman Returns".
LatinoReview.com has posted a report claiming that Paul Levitz, president of DC Comics, told them that Brandon Routh has had meetings both in offices in New York and Los Angeles to talk about the next movie.
At first I thought it was the Apple Martini I was drinking but I soon realized that I just heard a bombshell go off in my brain! Brandon? He did say Brandon Routh was coming around talking about Superman! Why the hell would they be talking to Brandon if he was not going to be part of the reboot? Because he's still in the mix!!!
The truth of the matter is that the way Mr. Levitz made it seem is that they love Brandon as Clark Kent and that he's just a great guy.
Apparently the hold up at the moment is Warner Bros. concentrating on getting Chris Nolan to commit to a third Batman film before pushing forward with Superman.
Remember, all the above is just speculation on behalf of LatinoReview.com. Nothing has officially been announced in regards to Brandon Routh or a release date.
Thanks to Eli Gutierrez for bringing this report to our attention. |

| October 9, 2008: TV Guide's Allison Mack Interview - Part 2 |
TVGuide.com has posted the second part of their 2-part interview with Allison Mack. Here's an excerpt from the interview...
TVGuide.com: Episode 10, "Bride," is rumored to be chock full of interesting stuff. And you are the bride.
Mack: I haven't read that script yet, so I don't really know what's in it. But I'm assuming that it's going to be chock full of everything.
TVGuide.com: There are rumors that Chloe will die, that she'll be brought back to life, that there won't even be a wedding....
Mack: Oh really? [Laughs] I think that there is a wedding, because we're doing a lot of fittings for dresses right now.
TVGuide.com: And how has that been?
Mack: Um, weird! Totally bizarre. It was strange, like the proposal scene where I was like, "Don't get down on your knees! Stand up! I'm not dealing with this [sort of stuff in real life] yet!" [Laughs]

| October 9, 2008: Internet Blog Becomes Part of Superman Lawsuit |
Comments posted on an internet blog at Newsarama.com have become an integral part of the on-going legal battle over the rights to Superman.
The entry posted in late August 2008 revealed previously unknown artwork and scripts from the 1934 collaboration between Jerry Siegel and Russell Keaton.
3. On or about September 13, 2008, I read a blog entry on the Internet site "Newsarama." Therein, an individual named Denis Kitchen claimed to possess additional continuities written by Siegel and submitted to Keaton. This blog entry is available at http://blog.newsarama.com/2008/08/20/russell-keaton-supermans-fifth-beatle/#comment-448958.
4. I thereafter contacted Mr. Kitchen and on September 19, 2008, I obtained a copy from Mr. Kitchen of a Superman continuity/story together with a cover letter from Siegel to Keaton dated November 13, 1934 enclosing (and dating) the story....
5. The story is the Superman "football story" mentioned in Siegel's 1934 preview of future Superman comics and subsequently published by Detective Comics in Action Comics No. 4.
A report on this latest debate is explained quite well at another Newsarama article.
Thanks to Jared Bond for bringing this to our attention. |

| October 9, 2008: Sarah Douglas Says Chris Reeve Was Difficult to Work With |
The Telegraph.co.uk reports that Sarah Douglas, who played Ursa in "Superman: The Movie" and "Superman II", was quoted as saying that Christopher Reeve was "difficult" and "caught up in his own image" during the filming of the two movies.
"I suffered a lot of back injuries on Superman and could only work for about an hour on the wires during my flying scenes and then had to have an hour off. And Christopher didn't take too kindly to the fact that this slowed things down so it was a bit tricky.
"At the beginning he was a very fresh-faced young American and at the end it was difficult. He definitely got caught up with his own Superman image."
The actress claims that when she finally revealed her feelings to co-star [Margot] Kidder, she replied: "Oh he was a right pain."
Douglas added: "I was so relived that somebody else had found him tricky. You don't want to speak ill of someone who has had a terrible accident. But my understanding is that after the injury everybody said he was a changed man and became an incredibly humble and generous guy."
UPDATE: Sarah Douglas, who is a friend of the Superman Homepage, sent the following comments to me via email in response to this article...
Chris and I were just buddies on the set and had no friendship off, but it was more to do with the fact that we were just mates on the set... just never friends in the way I hit it off with other cast members.
I think it is also important to point out that my injuries whilst flying caused me a lot of pain and I was possibly very cranky and not much fun for him to be around!!!
Nothing controversial and certainly no animosity... he is still the very best Superman ever! |
