Cleveland Superman Statue Receives Approval

Plans to erect a Superman statue on the grounds of the Huntington Convention Center in downtown Cleveland have been approved.

Earlier this month members of the Siegel & Shuster Society, a nonprofit organization, announced that progress was being made on getting approvals for statues honoring the Man of Steel, writer Jerry Siegel, artist Joe Shuster, and original Lois Lane model Joanne Siegel.

The Cleveland Planning Commission approved that proposal this past Friday, with the Superman tribute to be told in three parts across the Huntington Convention Center plaza.

Nick Slaughterbeck, architect and project manager from the design firm Moody Nolan said, “Philadelphia has Rocky Balboa, Milwaukee has the ‘Bronze Fonz.’ In Cleveland, we want to bring the ‘Man of Steel'”.

Part one of the three-part installation will see a phone booth (locked and non-operational), in which “Viewers will be able to see what appears to be the clothing of mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent in the phone booth” explained Nick Slaughterbeck.

The second part of the planned design will feature bronze statues of Superman’s co-creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, along with original Lois Lane model Joanne Siegel. As Joe sketches Joanne, Jerry stands nearby pointing skyward.
