What is the Best Superman Movie of the Past Decade? – Poll Results

In the latest Superman Homepage Member Poll we asked you the following question:

What was the best Superman movie (animated or live-action) of the 2010-2019 decade?

For all the criticism Henry Cavill’s Superman films have received online, I was pleasantly surprised to see that “Man of Steel” was voted the best Superman film of the past decade by quite a large percentage difference. Even “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” made it in to third spot!

I love all Superman films and appearances equally both live-action and animated from this or any other decade. They are all great in my eyes. Sure I have my specific favorites but I’m not picky.

Man of Steel was far better received by audiences that one might think. I’m not a big fan, personally, I think BvS did Superman better, but WB screwed the pooch when they cancelled a solo sequel.

I voted for Superman VS The Elite myself. It’s probably my favorite Superman movie in general.

Totally agree with MoS and BvS. As far as animated, thought Unbound was right up there.

I’m not trying to be snarky or anything, but I’m honestly asking how you thought BvS got Superman right… because I honestly thought they handled him poorly. I think that they did very little with him. At the expense of beefing up Batman’s character… which they deserted in JL also. I think special effects wise/and Cavills look we’re absolutely Superman but everything else was below par in terms of characterization. Just my opinion. I think people get distracted by seeing him do super things with special effects, but character wise he honestly did nothing… Jonathan/jor el/ zod/Batman just talk at… Read more »

In BvS, Superman is a guy who wants to help people, until the expectation placed upon him via a false messianic image the world has created for him takes a toll on not just his psyche, but also his effectiveness. This works alongside themes of false media representation and the dangers on the personal and community level of unilateral action that affects everyone. In many ways, it’s the inverse of the Donner Superman arc; an arc that is now widely accepted as the default, despite the fact that its religious connotations were without signficant precedence in the character at the… Read more »

Well you must admit the CGI was done well.

I think you’ve correctly pointed out a lot of story lines in BvS that were more so the way ZS hoped they would be interpreted. But I think I would side more with it being a bit more centered around Batman.

Eh, I think all of these movies are pretty ugly. Marvel’s too. I miss real sets and miniatures. That green screen mess just puts me to sleep.

I maintain that the structure of the narrative is very Superman focused. I’m talking about the three-hour-cut of the movie, not that disaster they released in theaters. That’s a different discussion altogether.

I voted for “Superman vs The Elite.” However, “Man of Steel” is a very close 2nd for me. In fact, I would love to see a live-action version of “The Elite” with Henry Cavill in the lead role as Superman. Overall though, I’m just glad that there was a long list of great Superman-films to choose from.

Superman vs the elite Has been surprisingly my favorite too… I would never think in a decade full of Superman movies including three live action ones, that an animated one would be my favorite. Here’s to hoping they give henry another shot at the character with an actual talented writer/director behind him. Goyer is garbage.

I was in the minority of people who voted for the Reign of the Supermen animated movie. I thought it was really good.

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would (I remember feeling that the Death and Returns storyline was a little too dragged out, but the film condensed it down just right).

I still haven’t seen the combined death and return of Superman movie yet. I expect it to be relatively the same as both films.

@Superman2878 – I honestly really enjoyed the “Reign of the Supermen” animated film. It’s not my favorite, but it was really well done. I’ve already watched it 3 times since it was released.

Hey GodzillaofSteel, how’s it going? Good to hear from you. 🙂
Yeah I just watched the combined Death and Return of Superman movie last night, and as much as I liked both films( especially Reign of the Supermen movie), I think it’s even better as a whole feature film.
🙂

I wasn’t really on board with grouping the animated and live together. BUT…most of the earlier animated were all done rather well.

They’re grouped together because there’s not much to choose from in the last ten years

I see some have voted for Superman Verses the Elite. Not saying it wasn’t made well BUT the one thing I couldn’t stand about it was Skull killing people, then the Elite killing Skull, only to have Superman act like what the Elite did was worse than Skull killing people, complete with Superman putting his cape over Skulls headless body.

It was a tough choice for me between Man of Steel and All-Star Superman. All-Star is my favorite comic. I love the part when Lex starts seeing the world as Superman does and finally understands Superman and why he tries to help so much.

Starting out with another burnt out Lois and Superman TV show, I don’t consider any such movement for the “better”.

I don’t mean juvenile in any sense. You want juvenile you watch Super-Friends. MoS and BvS were both nothing more than a different(some may say modern) interpretation of how these characters were presented. And I don’t think that Superman Returns was that far away from those, albeit Superman being a closer version of the CR era look.

Me too. I mean we got 1 movie in ten years and the naysayers will argue that BvS and Jl were Superman movies but we all know they weren’t.

I would agree with you on that. But I don’t know anyone that’s actually referred to either of them as a “Superman” movie. Especially in a stand alone sense.

I’m just asking this because I’m curious but what was the time length of Justice League and how long was Cavill’s appearance in that film?

Zack’s cut was much longer. So when he bowed out and the re-shoots were ordered they told JossW make it 2 hours and no longer. I haven’t seen the JL in a while but I would have to guess that maybe his appearance totaled about 15 minutes at the most.
