Celebrating the 300th episode of his “Inside of You” podcast, Michael Rosenbaum brought on Tom Welling as a special guest to help celebrate the milestone, and the two spoke about their careers, life stories, and their time together making the TV series “Smallville”.
During the discussion Michael asked Tom if he would be open to coming back to play Clark Kent in some kind of “Smallville” movie.
Welling responded by saying, “I mean, I’d be ‘Yes, let’s hear it.’ I don’t know how it would happen.”
Proud of his time working on the 10 seasons of the series about Clark Kent before he became Superman, Welling added, “I mean listen, I was thinking about this the other day right before we did our Talk Ville Podcast, we were on one of the most successful shows in the history of television, like Top 50. From that show, I’ve never gotten an incoming call from anyone involved in that show for further work. I don’t mean to, I’m not saying like I don’t feel bad about that, I don’t harp on anybody about that. But you would think that when you’re successful, you would be continued successful with successful people. But I think the time has changed.”
Tom Welling and Erica Durance did return to their roles in December 2019 on The CW’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event, in which a powerless Clark was confronted by Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor on the Kent Farm in Smallville. The two spoke about the idea of TV Special continuation of “Smallville” back in 2023 during a panel at MCM London Comic Con.
“Like our own multiverse? Sure! Why not,” said Welling.
“It’d be fun,” Durance added.
Even before that, Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum were said to be in talks with Warner Bros. about a “Smallville” animated series. In an interview with CBR.com back in October 2021 Rosenbaum said, “We just love the relationships and we love the characters on Smallville. I think a lot of people wish that it would keep going and there’s possibilities”. While Welling made the revelation via a Cameo video in June 2021 saying, “Michael Rosenbaum and I are actually working on an animated series to bring those characters back to life, and use as many of the original cast members as possible.”
It appears tha animated movie idea and TV special, along with a “Smallville” movie are all still ideas, but nothing more at this point in time… but fans can hope.
If I’m not mistaken, last year wasn’t there some news that there would be an animated continuation of Smallville as a fully animated film?
I remember this as well. I’d prefer that over live action because we have a better chance of seeing the suit. I don’t really have any interest to be honest in Tom finding more ways to not be in costume. The Clark portion of the story is over.
